NFL, Army team up to battle concussions

By Jeff Black, NBC News

Progress on limiting the health effects of concussions in the NFL and the Army will take a change in the ?warrior culture? that keeps players and soldiers silent and their comrades and leaders inattentive to the problem.

That?s the message NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Army Chief of Staff Gen. Raymond T. Odierno delivered in a panel discussion held at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. on Thursday afternoon and streamed online by the Army.

Goodell appeared on the panel the same day that the NFL filed a motion to dismiss 140 concussion lawsuits, saying the claims are pre-empted by federal labor law.

Before an audience of cadets, the two leaders, as well as two soldiers, two former players and two brain injury specialists, probed the topics of concussions and mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) in sports and the military and what can be done to help identify, treat and prevent them.

Brain injuries have been linked with the?suicides of former NFL players, most recently Junior Seau, ?and?suicides in the military.

All agreed that while coaches, platoon leaders and other leaders should bear responsibility for combating the problem, a third party needs to involved to help decide whether to keep soldiers and athletes active.?

?It?s not just the medical people or you as leaders? responsibility,? Odierno said. ?It?s you as a fellow soldier or fellow player. If you see that they?ve been injured and you can tell that they?re not necessarily with it entirely. We?re not asking you to make a diagnosis. Make sure you tell somebody. Get them of the field. Get them off the battlefield. And make sure they get the proper medical attention. It?s all of our responsibilities.?

Related:?Concussion crisis growing in girls' soccer

The panelists pointed out the similarities among soldiers and NFL athletes and cultures in which fierce competitiveness can allow injuries such as concussions to be ignored for sake of winning or completing a mission. Pressure from peers can also lead to players or soldiers not wanting to report health issues for fear of being perceived as weak.

?There?s been a greater awareness that these injuries are serious because they deal with your brain and they need the proper time to be able to recover from that,? Goodell said. ?Hopefully the awareness allows soldiers and players in any sport to understand that when you have these injuries you treat them seriously and make sure you get medical attention before you engage.?

Medical experts on the panel explained how new protocols and tests in the NFL and the military help diagnose concussions. For example, the Army takes an image of soldiers' brains before deployment to create base line that can be compared with an image after combat. Other rules and regulations keep players and soldiers from returning to action before they are cleared by a medical professional.

The effects of repeated?concussions and dangers to children?have spurred 38 states to pass concussion laws. Most require schools and leagues to inform athletes and parents about concussions, to remove kids who appear to have suffered concussions from play and to require players to be cleared by a health care professional before returning. The NFL has supported that effort.

Former NFL players?Troy Vincent and Bart Oates appeared on the panel, as did Staff Sgt. Shawn Hibbard and?Maj. Christopher Molino. The medical experts were?Maj. Sarah Goldman, Army's traumatic brain injury program director, and?Dr. Richard Ellenbogen, of the University of Washington, who co-chairs the NFL's head, neck and spine committee.

WHAT'S OBAMA DOING?

White House spokesman Jay Carney says Obama is "fully aware" of the happenings at the Republican convention in Tampa this week. But he says he doesn't think the president watched Paul Ryan's speech Wednesday night, nor does he know whether Obama will watch Romney address the GOP convention Thursday.

Carney didn't say whether he thought Ryan's speech was factually accurate. But he criticized Romney's campaign more broadly for distorting Obama's record and policy positions in speeches and advertisements.

"Perhaps when the facts aren't on your side, you ignore the facts," Carney says.

President Obama holds "ask me anything" live chat on Reddit

Barack Obama / Reddit

President Barack Obama is seen at the keyboard in a photo submitted to Reddit as part of the website's "ask me anything" live chat verification process.

By Rosa Golijan

President Obama and his staff are quite savvy when it comes to technology ? and social sites, in particular???so it shouldn't come as a surprise that they turned to the social sharing site Reddit today. But it did. With little advance notice, Obama held an "Ask Me Anything" (AMA) live chat, offering to take questions directly from the Reddit community.

"I am Barack Obama, President of the United States ??AMA," he posted on Reddit, adopting the sites terminology.?Several Reddit moderators and Admins quickly chimed in to confirm that they've verified Obama's identity and that the post isn't part of some sort of prank. Reddit's general manager Erik Martin told TODAY.com that the site's staff was in contact with Obama's staff.?Obama additionally posted a link to a tweet from his official Twitter account, pointing to that Reddit thread, along with a photo showing the president sitting at a laptop.

A Reddit AMA is basically a question-and-answer free-for-all. Any of the site's users are able to post questions in hopes that the individual hosting the AMA will answer. Celebrities such as Neil DeGrasse Tyson, Stephen Colbert, Deadmau5 and Ron Paul have conducted Reddit AMAs in the past, but ordinary individuals occasionally serve as hosts as well.

"Hey everybody ??this is Barack," the president wrote at the start of his AMA. "Just finished a great rally in Charlottesville, and am looking forward to your questions. At the top, I do want to say that our thoughts and prayers are with folks who are dealing with Hurricane Isaac in the Gulf, and to let them know that we are going to be coordinating with state and local officials to make sure that we give families everything they need to recover."

Twitter

Obama was due to answer questions on Reddit for about half an hour. More than 10,000 comments piled up by the time the conversation passed the half-hour mark. Here's a rundown of the topics Obama covered:

Are you considering increasing funds to the space program? "Making sure we stay at the forefront of space exploration is a big priority for my administration. The passing of Neil Armstrong this week is a reminder of the inspiration and wonder that our space program has provided in the past; the curiosity probe on mars is a reminder of what remains to be discovered. The key is to make sure that we invest in cutting-edge research that can take us to the next level ??so even as we continue work with the International Space Station, we are focused on a potential mission to an asteroid as a prelude to a manned Mars flight."

Is Internet freedom an issue you'd push to add to the Democratic Party's 2012 platform??"Internet freedom is something I know you all care passionately about; I do too. We will fight hard to make sure that the Internet remains the open forum for everybody ??from those who are expressing an idea to those to want to start a business. And although their will be occasional disagreements on the details of various legislative proposals, I won't stray from that principle ??and it will be reflected in the platform."

Favorite basketball player? "[Michael] Jordan ??I'm a Bulls guy."

How are you going help small businesses in 2013 and 2014? And what if any bills are you going to implement for small businesses, in 2013, and 2014? "We've really focused on this since I came into office ? 18 tax cuts for small business, easier funding from the SBA [Small Business Administration]. Going forward, I want to keep taxes low for the 98 percent of small businesses that have $250,000 or less in income, make it easier for small business to access financing, and expand their opportunities to export. And we will be implementing the Jobs Act bill that I signed that will make it easier for startups to access crowd-funding and reduce their tax burden at the start-up stage."

What is the first thing you'll do on Nov. 7th, win or lose??"Win or lose, I'll be thanking everybody who is working so hard ? especially all the volunteers in field offices all across the country, and the amazing young people in our campaign offices."

What was the most difficult decision that you had to make during this term? "The decision to surge our forces in Afghanistan. Anytime you send our brave men and women into battle, you know that not everyone will come home safely, and that necessarily weighs heavily on you. The decision did help us blunt the Taliban's momentum, and is allowing us to transition to Afghan lead ??so we will have recovered that surge at the end of this month, and will end the war at the end of 2014. But knowing of the heroes that have fallen is something you never forget."

What are you going to do to end the corrupting influence of money in politics during your second term??"Money has always been a factor in politics, but we are seeing something new in the no-holds-barred flow of seven- and eight-figure checks, most undisclosed, into super-PACs; they fundamentally threaten to overwhelm the political process over the long run and drown out the voices of ordinary citizens. We need to start with passing the Disclose Act that is already written and [has] been sponsored in Congress ? to at least force disclosure of who is giving to who. We should also pass legislation prohibiting the bundling of campaign contributions from lobbyists. Over the longer term, I think we need to seriously consider mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United (assuming the Supreme Court doesn't revisit it). Even if the amendment process falls short, it can shine a spotlight of the super-PAC phenomenon and help apply pressure for change."

What's the recipe for the White House's beer? "It will be out soon! I can tell from firsthand experience, it is tasty."

Understanding The Procedure Of Breast Augmentation | Jackie's ...

If a woman is not pleased with her figure she may choose to remedy her problem by having a cosmetic procedure. Breast augmentation is one such procedure. Surgery of this type provides a way for women to increase their bust size and combat a poor self-image. While it is true that such procedures have assisted a high number of women to feel better about their physical appearance, they are not the best solution for all women.

There are advantages and disadvantages associated with all types of cosmetic surgery. For this reason, each individual must make her own decision about whether or not a specific procedure is a wise option. If a woman chooses to move forward with breast augmentation, she should select her cosmetic surgeon with care.

Breast augmentation involves the surgical placement of implants. The latter are placed underneath the woman?s natural breasts. The size one chooses is largely a matter of personal preference, although most cosmetic surgeons will make recommendations based on the woman?s frame.

The implants are manufactured from silicone or saline, although saline is the more common of the two substances. This is because it is considered the safest choice and offers the best results. However, both options are usually discussed at the woman?s initial consultation.

The implants are usually positioned under the woman?s chest muscle. However, in certain instances they are placed on top. This is another detail of the procedure that a woman should discuss with her doctor before scheduling the surgery. Certain cosmetic professionals will not place the implant above the muscle, as to do so sometimes results in post surgery complications but offers no additional cosmetic advantages.

Breast enhancement surgery is typically completed on an outpatient basis. Most of the time the woman can return home after a few hours of recovery time. However, if complications occur following the procedure, the patient may have to stay in the hospital for several nights. Recovery time is something that will vary significantly from one individual to the next. In most cases, however, a woman will find that she can resume her normal daily activities within three days of her procedure.

Selecting a plastic surgeon is not something that should be taken lightly. Most medical professionals recommend choosing a surgeon who specializes in breast augmentation. While most general plastic surgeons are familiar with the aforementioned procedure, numerous individuals find that they are more comfortable with surgeons who specialize. Additionally, it is always a good idea to carefully weigh the advantages and disadvantages of any cosmetic procedure before surgery is scheduled.

Panasonic's 145inch 8K PDP eyeson

Tucked away into a dark corner of Panasonic's booth is the clear highlight of the outfit's IFA 2012 showcase: a 145-inch 8K plasma display panel. Developed in partnership with Japan's NHK, the prototype is merely a proof of concept for the broadcaster's planned 2020 launch of Super Hi Vision TV. In person, the flat screen is truly awe-inspiring, offering such richness of detail that even up-close we weren't able to discern any pixels, while colors appeared balanced and natural. Overall, the image quality -- 16 times that of regular full HD -- nearly apes the real-world images it replicates. Unfortunately, you'll have to wait sometime before this tech trickles down to the mass market level. In the meantime, content yourself with a brief video demo after the break.

'AGT' semifinals: Andrew De Leon wows crowd

By Bruna Nessif, E! Online

With 24 acts going into the semifinals, it's no surprise that "America's Got Talent" is splitting the performances into two episodes. Regardless, we got to kick-off the beginning of the end on Tuesday night, so let's get straight into who performed and will be facing eliminations tomorrow.

Which four wildcards made it to the semifinals?

The show started off strong with an impeccable performance of "Ave Maria" by Andrew De Leon, which earned him a standing ovation from the crowd, but still got some flack from the judges. Howie Mandel brought up the fact that De Leon doesn't have any formal training and Sharon Osbourne said he needs to lose the gothic look if he wants to be taken seriously. Geez!

Todd Oliver and his "talking dog" were next. Oliver tried a different tactic by setting up his act as a late-night talk show and his pup was the guest. Cute idea. Regardless of what people may think of this act, the judges absolutely love it. "You are a headline act. Your material was spot on for this audience. You had them in the palm of your hand," Howard Stern said.

The crowd seemed to love watching Donovan and Rebecca, a very good-looking and strong married couple, show off their acrobatic strength and skill. But then again, it may have been their barely-there costumes.

Andrew De Leon gets a second chance!

A 14-year-old Edon Pinchot got the attention of all the young girls in the crowd when he sang One Direction's "What Makes You Beautiful." The person he didn't impress? Stern, who was "a little bit bored by that song." Hey, take that up with the writers.

The Scott Brothers did a dance routine that didn't seem to resonate with anybody once it was done. Sorry. Nothing too memorable here.

Freaky alert! Eric Dittelman, known as just "Dittelman," is a mind reader. No, seriously. He told Stern to color-in a sketch of his face on an easel and Dittelman produced a drawing that was almost identical to what Stern did! Howard said, "He deserves to go through."

Remember these OMG moments from America's Next Top Model?

Another standing ovation was given to contortionist and street dancer Turf, who included more dancing into tonight's routine. Stern, who has shown Turf love from the start, told the contestant, "I'm pulling for you."

Unfortunately, the beautiful voice of Bria Kelly wasn't enough for the judges. After performing Pink's "Perfect," the judges told her that she lacked emotion and needs stronger stage presence.

Joe Castillo was entertaining with his sand art creations. Especially when he was able to morph his art from one bird into two hands clasping and ultimately into two faces--one of them being Jesus. Kudos, sir.

Poor Kelly Osbourne got hurt on the AGT set

"The largest stringed instrument in the world" graced the AGT stage tonight when William Close played his giant Earth Harp. The judges absolutely loved it.

After Mandel picked a topic, Tom Cotter did what he does best--tell jokes. But the best part was they were actually funny! He cracked about "the best 28 semesters" of his life.

Last to perform was the theatrical hip-hop group Academy of Villains, who were great to close the show with all their lasers, smoke and red balloons. And although Sharon thought it was "incredible," Stern had to come in and say, "I got a little bit bored through it and was wishing it would be over."

Psssh.

Which performers should move on to the finals? Tell us on our Facebook page.

Lexmark C746dn

The Lexmark C746dn , a color laser printer geared to mid-sized workgroups, is a close relative of the Lexmark C748de that I recently reviewed. The C746dn lacks the latter's massive touch screen and can't handle quite as large print volumes, but it costs less and printed better graphics in our testing. If your business is looking for a workhorse printer that can output high-quality graphics, the C746dn should be on your short list.

The gray-and-white C746dn measures 17.9 by 17.1 by 15.7 inches (HWD) and weighs 56 pounds?this tall and hulking printer is best moved into place by two people. Set in the middle of the front panel is a 2.4-inch non-touch color LCD, which is controlled by a 4-way rocker with central button. Other buttons include Back, Home, Sleep, and Cancel. To the right of the screen is an alphanumeric keypad. A front USB port lets you print from a thumb drive, though you can't preview the documents.

The C746dn has a standard paper capacity of 650 sheets, split between a 550-sheet tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder. You can add an optional 2,000-sheet tray ($599 direct) plus up to 3 additional 550-sheet trays ($299 each) to bring the maximum paper capacity to 4,300 sheets. Another option is a 160-GB hard drive ($479 direct). Its maximum monthly duty cycle of 85,000 pages is slightly less than the C748de's 100,000 pages. This printer comes standard with an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. The Lexmark C746n ($699 direct) is the same as the C746dn but lacks the auto-duplexer, while the Lexmark C746dtn ($1,199 direct) adds another 550-sheet paper tray for the same price as you'd pay if you bought the C746dn plus the tray separately.

The C746dn connects via USB or Ethernet (optional Wi-Fi is available); I tested it over an Ethernet connection with its driver installed on a computer running Windows Vista.

Lexmark C746dn

Printing Speed
The C746dn, rated at up to 35 pages per minute for both color and monochrome printing, printed out our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software), at an effective 7.5 pages per minute (ppm). That?s in line with its rated speed, and should be about the speed you?d get if you were to print text only. The Lexmark C748de, also rated at 35 pages per minute, was timed at 7.1 ppm, as was the OKI C711dn , rated at up to 34 pages per minute for monochrome printing, 32 for color. The three printers are essentially tied, as we don't consider differences of less than 1 ppm as significant at these speeds. We clocked the Editors? Choice Xerox Phaser 6280DN at 4.5 ppm when we tested it in 2009.

Output Quality
Overall output quality based on our tests was par for a color laser, with below-par text, above-par graphics, and par photo quality.? Text quality was suitable for general business use, but not for documents like resumes in which you seek to convey a good visual impression, nor for desktop publishing or marketing materials.

Graphics quality was very good, with bright colors and only minor flaws, namely dithering (graininess) and trouble printing some thin, colored lines. They're good enough for PowerPoint handouts or graphics in formal reports, including ones going to people you're seeking to impress, or for graphics-heavy marketing materials. Photos were of a quality suitable for use in client newsletters.

Lexmark's claimed cost per printed page for the C746dn is 1.8 cents per monochrome and 12.8 cents per color page. The Lexmark C748de has the same claimed 1.8-cent monochrome running cost but a lower color cost at 9.8 cents per page. The LED-based OKI C711dn?s running costs were lower still, at 1.1 cents per monochrome page and 7.9 cents per color page. The Xerox Phaser 6280dn's costs were somewhat higher, at 2.7 cents per monochrome page and 13.8 cents per color page.

Businesses looking for a workhorse printer for mid-sized workgroups to output color graphics should take special note of the Lexmark C746dn. It costs less than the Lexmark C748de yet has comparable speed and showed better graphics quality in our testing. The C746dn falls short on text quality, though. Although slower than the two Lexmarks, the Editors' Choice Xerox Phaser 6280DN excels in output quality, with text quality fully the equal of its exemplary graphics. Xerox has discontinued the 6280DN, but it's available from a number of etailers at steep discounts. If print speed is more important than text quality, though, the C746dn can also print out magnificent graphics, and at a much faster clip.

Kids and the Future of Technology ? Teens and Technology [SERIES]

This is the fifth and final segment in a week-long, five-part series on technology and our kids. David Matthau talks to teens, their parents a child psychologist, a sociologist and an education expert to get different perspectives on the positive and negative aspects of technology, and how it?s affecting the way our children think and behave.

Most Jersey teens have embraced technology ? and are hyper-focused on their cell phones, and texting to communicate with friends and family ? but how will high-tech be impacting them in 10 or 15 years?

Teen at Computer

Chung Sung-Jun, Getty Images

Fourteen year old Samantha says ?it?s just going to keep improving and improving and improving?I think one day our lives will be completely run by technology ? I think eventually we will have these little screens ? like when we walk through the door, that gets us everything we need, like if you need a drink, maybe like something will just come at you, or whatever. Eventually we won?t even need to be getting up ? like from the couch or from the sofa- or whatever ? I just think everything will be done for us.

Central Jersey teen Tristen says ?I think they?re going to be coming out with like hologram screens, and I think in the future at one point there?s going to be like a TV kind of, and you put on something, and then you can go into it ? and it?s virtual reality and everything ? and you could feel the pain and emotions and everything, and

it?s pretty much you own new world, and you could be in that world instead of this world and everybody?s going want to be in that world ? so it?s going to be completely different and I think it?s just going to take over the world.?

If that doesn?t happen he says ?they?re going to put chips inside your brain- where you can see everything, and you know you can go on the internet anywhere or send a text message?technology really helps in my life? you can carry on a conversation on the text message for hours and hours and hours, and you always have something else to say.?

Child psychologist Dr. Steven Tobias says ?we need to worry ? we need to be very scared if that?s what the future is going to be.?

He says ?kids don?t realize the consequences of their actions, they don?t realize what they?re doing?texting leads to misunderstandings , it leads to a lack of communication ? I really do not think texting facilitates communication at all?teenagers have a very limited life experience ? they don?t understand the value of real communication?being in touch with someone involves touching ? the more senses that are involved in communication, the more gratifying that emotional communication is?if you want to really connect with somebody ? what do you do ? you give them a hug ? you can?t do that through electronic media ? I think that teens have no idea of what they?re going to be missing if this is their future.?

Rutgers sociology professor Dr. Deborah Carr agrees.

She says texting is ?a very quick communication that doesn?t engage emotion, it doesn?t allow people to really work out their thoughts or reason out their thoughts?it doesn?t allow people to delve into deeper, meaningful communication, to work out conflict, to work out ambiguities.?

She says the vision of the future ? where micro-chips are implanted in our brains to allow for quick texting and internet searches ? may sound exciting to young people, but it doesn?t really ?cut to the chase of what communication should be -which is kind of sharing ones real opinions and values and emotions with a person who fully understands them?I do suspect that technology leads to more alone time, rather than together time, it does lead to more sedentary behavior?there is a downside if people use technology as a substitute for, rather than a supplement to standard face to face communication.?

London Firings Seen Surging as Financial Firms Add New York Jobs

Financial firms in London, besieged by Europe?s sovereign-debt crisis, probably will shrink their workforce this year, snapping a hiring rebound from 2008?s credit crisis as New York?s industry ekes out job growth.

Banks, insurers and other financial-services firms may eliminate a total of about 3,000 jobs across greater London as companies in the New York region add 9,000, according to U.K.-based researcher Oxford Economics Ltd.

London?s proximity to the debt crisis is undermining the city?s efforts to gain on its transatlantic rival. While Wall Street also is suffering from a global slowdown in trading and deal-making, North American banks are benefiting from a surge in consumer lending.

?Europe is still going into deeper waters, which would make London less attractive, more risky? for employers, said John A. Challenger, chief executive officer of Chicago-based Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc., which advises firms on workforce reductions. ?Momentum for the lead has turned back toward New York and the U.S.?

Reductions will be particularly acute in London?s wholesale financial-services industry, which may cut 25,200 positions this year, according to the Centre for Economics and Business Research Ltd.

HSBC Holdings Plc, Europe?s biggest bank by market value, announced plans in April to eliminate 3,167 positions in its home U.K. market, mostly in senior and middle management, under a plan to rein in costs. Frankfurt-based Deutsche Bank AG, Germany?s largest lender, said last month it will cut about 1,900 jobs, including 1,500 in its investment bank, which has operations in London and New York.

Hiring Spree

Financial-services firms and insurers in both cities had been hiring. London added about 28,000 jobs in the two years ended Dec. 31 and 13,000 more in this year?s first quarter, reaching 382,000, according to the most recent figures from the U.K.?s Office for National Statistics.

New York City gained 12,500 during those two years and 5,500 more through July, according to the New York State Department of Labor. About 446,200 people now work in the financial industry, the data show.

U.S. lenders benefited from a 125 percent jump in mortgage- banking income, which amounted to $13.7 billion in the year?s first half, according to Inside Mortgage Finance, an industry publication. Credit cards and other forms of revolving debt held by U.S. commercial banks rose 0.8 percent to $601.4 billion in July from a year earlier, Federal Reserve data show.

Lucrative Packages

That belies the past year?s turmoil across the investment- banking industry, where workers typically reap the most lucrative pay packages. The trading and deals slump, as well as stiffer capital rules and limits on risk-taking, have left securities firms on both sides of the Atlantic facing questions about whether they?re locked in a so-called secular, or lasting, decline.

Average daily equity-trading on the largest U.S. exchanges has fallen 15 percent this year so far, compared with the same period in 2011. In London, the figure is down 10 percent on 2011. Pending and completed mergers and acquisitions in the nation dropped 35 percent to about $575 billion. That compares with Europe?s 21 percent slide to $505 billion.

The slowdown has prompted investment banks to pare jobs in their securities divisions. New York-based Citigroup Inc. will eliminate about 350 positions in its securities unit, people with knowledge of the plan said last month. Goldman Sachs Group Inc., which generated 58 percent of first-half revenue from sales and trading, eliminated 20 to 30 jobs in that division this week, a person briefed on the matter said.

Boutique Firms

?The bigger guys have an oversupply of people,? said Gustavo Dolfino, a former UBS AG banker who?s now CEO of WhiteRock Group LLC in New York, which advises on employment in financial services. Meantime, boutique firms and regional lenders are targeting talent in areas such as health-care, technology and energy banking, he said.

New York firms with hiring aspirations include Cantor Fitzgerald LP, which is adding 200 employees this year and may hire 800 more for its broker-dealer in coming years, CEO Shawn Matthews said in an interview in June.

Toronto-Dominion Bank, Canada?s No. 2 lender by assets, plans to add about 50 branches in New York over the next four years as part of a strategy to rank among the area?s top three lenders by number of locations. Aflac Inc., the Columbus, Georgia-based insurer with the talking-duck mascot, opened an investment-management office in Manhattan in May.

Many of the new jobs aren?t ?the same type of high-level, Wall Street, get-a-Porsche-and-Ferrari-type jobs that everyone was trying to put themselves in the position to get a couple years ago,? said Adam Kahn, managing partner at Odyssey Search Partners, which recruits executives for Wall Street firms.

New Talent

Some large banks are offsetting senior-staff reductions by recruiting less-expensive workers. New York-based Goldman Sachs, seeking to cut $500 million of costs, expects its workforce to feature a greater proportion of junior employees by year-end, Chief Financial Officer David A. Viniar, 57, said July 17.

?Wall Street is tilting toward younger, up-and-coming talent,? Kahn said. ?Some of the folks that have a lot of experience and are paid a lot more money have been downsized in a cost-cutting effort.?

Finding a job has been toughest for people seeking middle- management positions, while lower ranks, such as associates and analysts, are faring better, WhiteRock?s Dolfino said.

London?s financial industry probably will rejoin New York?s in adding jobs next year, and growth will be about 1 percent in both places, according to Oxford Economics. London?s financial district may regain almost 1,300 jobs in 2013, CEBR said in May when releasing what it called ?a sharp downward revision? to its forecast.

The change ?shows how the financial crisis is hitting the City,? the firm?s CEO, Douglas McWilliams, said at the time.

Lebanese Shiite clan vows to abduct more Syrians

BEIRUT (AP) ? A powerful Shiite Muslim clan in Lebanon on Thursday claimed to have abducted more Syrian nationals and vowed further kidnappings in retaliation for the seizure of a family member by rebels in Syria this week, as Syria's civil war threatened to break open violent rivalries in its neighbor Lebanon.

The wave of kidnappings raises the dire scenario that the battle for control over Syria will ignite tensions in Lebanon, a country with its own history of civil war, an explosive sectarian mix and deep divisions between pro- and anti-Syrian factions ? many of them armed.

Already, the abductions have brought gunmen from both the Shiite and Sunni communities into the streets. On Wednesday, Shiite supporters of the al-Mikdad clan went on a rampage in a Beirut neighborhood, vandalizing dozens of Syrian-run stores, and then blocked the road to the airport, setting tires on fire and wandering the road with guns. Travelers were forced to walk from their cars to the airport, and at least one flight was cancelled. The road was only reopened early Thursday morning.

The tensions emerged Thursday in the eastern Bekaa Valley, near the Syrian border. Masked men believed to be from the Bekaa town of Majdal Anjar ? a Sunni stronghold ? burned tires and set up roadblocks on the main highway leading to the Masnaa border crossing between Lebanon and Syria. They stopped cars going either way and checked passengers' IDs before deciding whether to let them pass, apparently looking for Shiites or Mikdad supporters.

In the nearby town of Chtoura, four gunmen abducted Syrian businessman Hossam Khasroum, pulling him from his car as he was driving and taking him to an unknown location, security officials said. Khasroum, the offficials said, is known to be a support of Assad's regime.

In a separate incident, gunmen attacked a car driven by pro-Syrian Lebanese politician, Joseph Abu-Fadel, breaking his car windows with stones as he was driving to Syria. He and three others were lightly injured.

On Wednesday, armed members of the al-Mikdad clan said they had kidnapped more than 20 Syrian nationals and a Turk in Lebanon in retaliation for the abduction of their relative, Hassane Salim al-Mikdad, who was captured in Syria this week.

Rebels who kidnapped al-Mikdad claimed he was a member of the Shiite militant group Hezbollah, a staunch supporter of President Bashar Assad's regime. Hezbollah and his family deny this.

Maher al-Mikdad, a family spokesman, warned on Thursday that "if anything happens to Hassane, we will kill the Turkish hostage we have and many others. But we will start with the Turks."

Speaking to The Associated Press, he said the clan has snatched more Syrians and warned that it would go on with further kidnappings until their clansman is released. He could not give an exact number but said the clan was now holding more than 20 captives.

Lebanon's government appeared largely unable or unwilling to stop the kidnapping spree and escalating violence. Hezbollah and its allies hold a majority in the Cabinet, which has adopted a policy of "disassociation" from the events in Syria, trying to remain neutral. Hezbollah critics say it is assisting Assad in moving the conflict to Lebanon to divert attention from the deadly civil war raging in Syria.

The al-Mikdad family is a powerful Shiite Muslim clan that originally comes from the eastern Bekaa Valley, an area where state control is limited and revenge killings are common. Like most tribes in this area, they have their own militia, and security officials say many of its members are outlaws wanted on arrest warrants. The family reach also extends to the capital.

A south Beirut neighborhood with strong al-Mikdad ties, Rweis, is often avoided by outsiders who fear any possible offense that could put them at odds with the clan. The al-Mikdad's power often put them at odds with Hezbollah, the main power broker in the area, although many observers believe the appearance of armed groups Wednesday claiming to be members of the "military wing" of al-Mikdad family could not have happened without at least tacit Hezbollah support.

The wave of hostage-taking prompted Gulf countries to call on all their citizens in Lebanon to leave immediately. Sunni regional powerhouses Saudi Arabia and Qatar, who back the Syrian rebels, were the first, followed by the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Kuwait. Lebanon is a popular summer destination for Gulf residents trying to escape the searing heat.

Al-Mikdad backed off an earlier threat to abduct Gulf nationals. He said Thursday that only Syrians and Turks would be targeted.

"Our problem is with the Syrians who have abducted our son and Syrian opponents of the region," he said. "And why Turkey? Because Turkey is an operation theater for the Free Syrian Army," he added.

Turkey shelters thousands of Syrian refugees along with the leadership and members of the Free Syrian Army rebel group.

The conflict in Syria has a sharply sectarian tone. The rebels are predominantly Sunni, whereas President Bashar Assad and his inner circle come mainly from the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiism. Similarly, Lebanon has had long rivalries between its own Sunni and Shiite communities. Throughout Syria's conflict, Lebanese Sunnis have largely been sympathetic to the Syrian rebellion, while Hezbollah ? the main Shiite political power ? has backed Assad.

Intuit Selling its Web Hosting Business to Endurance International ...

Intuit, which has made a several years long push into the hosting space, announced this week it was selling its hosting business to Endurance International GroupIntuit, which has made a several years long push into the hosting space, announced this week it was selling its hosting business to Endurance International Group

Finance software giant Intuit reached a deal this week to sell its Intuit Websites business, a web hosting service that includes the previously-acquired Homestead Technologies business, to shared hosting giant Endurance International Group.

Intuit, which acquired Homestead back in 2007, had become a pretty significant force in the hosting space, one of several companies from outside the business to make its way into the hosting space via an acquisition, as a means of targeting a large existing base of customers. Similar moves have been made by printing services companies Deluxe, which acquired hosting provider Hostopia (Deluxe later acquired hosting provider Aplus.net) and VistaPrint, which acquired website builder and hosting firm Webs.com.

Website hosting was part of a big push for Intuit, which made some waves in the hosting market by being one of a small handful of companies advertising hosting services on television, for example.

Intuit Websites was part of the company?s Small Business Group, an overall set of services aimed at small business customers. In what might be either an affirmation for hosting providers worried that competition from big all-in-one small business services ? or bad news for hosting companies looking to potentially be acquired by such a firm ? the sale has a hint of an admission that the hosting business wasn?t working out for Intuit.

?The way small businesses think about their Web presence is evolving and our customers will be better served by a company that is primarily focused on websites and hosting services,? said Barry Saik, vice president and general manager of Intuit?s Grow Your Business division, quoted in the press release. ?Selling Intuit Websites to Endurance presented the best way to accelerate our Small Business Group?s success and provide our customers with a best-in-class solution.?

Intuit paid $170 million for Homestead in 2007. The cost of the sale to Endurance was not disclosed in the announcement. In the press release, the company says the Intuit Websites business contributed $76 million of revenue in fiscal 2012.

Endurance, of course, is well known for its ongoing effort to acquire prominent hosting companies serving the mass market. Endurance tends to continue operating those hosting brands it acquires as separate brands, while migrating some of their systems onto its own platform, and the company currently operates close to 40 hosting brands, serving nearly 3 million customers and 10 million domains.

?With this acquisition, Endurance will add the intuitive and adaptable website builder that Intuit developed, which will provide immediate benefits to our customers and strategic value to our company,? said Hari Ravichandran, chief executive officer and founder of Endurance, also quoted in the press release. ?This acquisition also enables Endurance to provide current Intuit Website customers with access to our comprehensive online applications and services, allowing them to enhance and grow their online presences over time.?

Endurance?s most recent acquisition move was the purchase of shared and reseller hosting giant HostGator. While the news first surfaced in June as rumor, it has since been confirmed by the companies.

Talk back: Do you think the sale of Intuit?s web hosting business means its all-in-one model wasn?t as successful as the company hoped? Is that a good thing, or a bad thing, in your opinion? How do you feel about Endurance?s ongoing expansion through acquisition? Let us know in the comments.

It's policy and personal: Romney hammered on taxes

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Democrats are growing increasingly confident that a two-pronged tax attack on Republican Mitt Romney ? one part policy, one part personal ? will help President Barack Obama lure pivotal support from middle class voters.

Led by Obama, the Democrats are going after Romney for seeking to protect tax cuts for the wealthy and for refusing to release more information on the taxes he pays on his personal fortune.

Democrats say both public and private polls suggest the double-barreled focus on taxes is giving Obama an edge in the race. The strategy also gives the president an avenue to campaign on the economy ? the top issue for voters ? while steering clear of talking about the nation's high unemployment.

Three months before the election, national polls show Obama with a slight lead. And Romney will spend the coming weeks ? starting Saturday with a bus tour ? trying to change the trajectory of the race. In recent days, he's gone on the offensive by criticizing Obama on welfare, making his own play for middle class voters, after months of taking heat from Democrats.

Republicans reject the notion that Romney's $5 trillion tax cut proposal could hurt him in the fall. But some party operatives acknowledge that he is being damaged by declining to release more than two years of his own tax returns.

"I do think this has hurt the governor a little bit," said Steve Lombardo, a Republican pollster who worked on Romney's 2008 presidential campaign. "Ironically, it's really less about 'rich guy' and more about transparency and honesty. So Team Romney has to find a way ? if they're not going to release, which I don't think they will ? they have to find a way to demonstrate honesty and transparency, attributes that people take very seriously in selecting a president."

Maria Cardona, a Democratic strategist, said the tax criticism has "really seeped into the American psyche" and is affecting the way voters view Romney.

"They're thinking, this is not somebody who is going to fight for me. This is not somebody who even understands the world I live in," said Cardona, who was a senior adviser to Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign four years ago.

The Obama campaign ramped up its criticism of Romney's refusal to release his tax returns Thursday with a new television advertisement that ? without evidence ? raises the prospect that the GOP challenger paid no taxes some years.

"Did Romney pay 10 percent in taxes? 5 percent? Zero? We don't know," the narrator says. The ad will run in Virginia, North Carolina, Florida and Ohio while Romney is on a bus tour through those states starting Saturday.

Romney says he has paid taxes every year. But he's provided little documentation to back up his assertions.

His campaign dismissed the ad and accused Obama of running "a dirty campaign."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., helped lay the groundwork when he claimed last week that an anonymous source told him Romney had not paid taxes for 10 years. Reid provided no evidence.

On the policy front, Obama has sought to highlight the contrast between the two candidates' tax proposals.

The president is pushing Congress to extend tax cuts only for families making less than $250,000 a year (individuals making less than $200,000). He wants to let the cuts expire at the end of the year for families who make more, though they would still be taxed at the lower rate for their first $250,000 in income.

Romney's tax plan calls for a full extension of the tax cuts, first passed under George W. Bush, plus an additional 20 percent cut across the board. Romney and some economists argue that raising taxes on anyone right now could send the sluggish economy back into a recession.

But Obama, seeking to tap into middle class economic anxiety, has mocked Romney's proposal as "trickle-down tax-cut fairy dust." And this week he called the plan "Romney-hood" or "Robin Hood in reverse."

Surveys suggest Obama's plans resonate with voters.

A Pew Research Center Poll released last month showed 44 percent of Americans believe raising taxes on the wealthiest would help the economy, not hurt it. Just 22 percent believe the opposite. The same poll showed that Americans believe two-to-one that Obama's tax proposals would make the tax system more fair, not less.

Democrats say they're also buoyed by private polling in both the presidential election and competitive congressional races that shows strong voter support for the president's tax policies. One Democratic strategist said the internal polls show at least 60 percent of Americans, including independents and some Republicans, backing the notion that the wealthy should pay more in taxes and that the nation's deficit must be reduced through a combination of tax increases and spending cuts.

But Republican strategist Charlie Black, an informal adviser to Romney's campaign, disputes the notion that Obama's arguments are gaining ground.

"The Obama campaign outspent us in June and the first half of July with all those arguments, and the numbers haven't moved anywhere, even in the national polls," Black said.

Whatever the case, Obama's team doesn't intend to move off its tax criticism.

"You can bet the president will be talking about their differing visions for tax cuts up until the moment the polls close on Nov. 6," said Jennifer Psaki, a campaign spokeswoman.

Features present in bird painting artists - IdeaMarketers.com

Few details on the intrinsic qualities of bird painting artists have been discussed.

Bird painting artists are the ones who specialize in portrayal of the birds in their most natural settings and instincts. Bird painters have started to receive appreciation for their art form. There are many artists who believe in collaborating and creating a masterpiece jointly with other artists.

When you take a look at any of the bird paintings you should try to observe the following things.

Strokes of the artist:

Bird paintings are not what you think about painting pretty, little birds. Bird painting has more to it than drawing or filling colors to the feathers of the birds. In real life you might have observed the difference in species of birds. Within a single species you will notice the difference between two genders and also within the genders. Only a bird lover would be able to capture the difference and portray it in his art work. Equally amazing bird lover would be able to understand the difference in the strokes used by the bird painting artists. Their attempt is to bring in the nature of birds in their art work.

Use of Colors:

While bird painting artists would love to make use of bold, strong and vibrant colors, there are others for subtler tones. At the same time there are artists who keep it to the basic of black and white. As a buyer you need to understand what appeals you the most and what is your requirement. Also you need to pay attention to the ambiance of the place where you would be placing your bird painting.

Soul into the art:

Capturing an image onto a canvass is one thing and capturing the innate qualities of the bird is another. Look out for the work of the bird painting artists who specialize in such refined form of arts. Many people opt for bird paintings because of some cultural influence. There are many philosophies that establish installing of bird paintings of specific species would bring happiness and prosperity.

There are even few artists who bring in their mythical and imaginary birds. There are also artists who do not just paint a bird on the canvass. They would paint a story on the canvass. Such artists keep their art work open to the interpretation of the viewers. There are many artists who would try their best to create a masterpiece. Online art galleries showcase works of many established and amateur artists with great potentials.

FineArtMaya offers a great collection of exquisite San Diego art galleries and other art gallery. Based in San Diego it is one of the most prominent bird painting artists in California.

CC Standards for Mathematical Practice: Analyzing Key Information ...

?

The Common Core for Math is a two-dimensional construct. Its first dimension is the content students are to learn; its second dimension is how students are to learn it.?The Common Core?s authors have organized it in this two-dimensional fashion because they understand that students learn mathematics by practicing it ? by doing it repeatedly in different ways and with many variations in initial conditions, strategies, levels of reasoning, and available information. The Common Core?s authors have organized its mathematics elements around the positive idea that mathematics has a culture of accomplishment that favors a set of habits.

The first general habit on the list ? the first Standard for Mathematical Practice ? is: ?Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.? This is actually a heading that covers thirteen different specific habits, which I identified?here. In this post, I?ll address the third of these: ?Students analyze [given facts], constraints, relationships, and goals.?

This is the first explicit reference to a higher-level cognitive domain in the Common Core Standard for Mathematical Practice. It opens up a huge can of worms: how do we analyze facts, constraints, relationships, and goals?

Analysis has a several meanings in science and mathematics. My favorite words can reveal their meanings in their etymologies: analysis is one of my favorite words.

The root word of ?analysis? is ?lysis?, which in Greek means to loosen. The normal use of the word is to describe a process or the result of a process where the various parts of a single thing are ?loosened? from each other: we look at the parts of a thing to learn more about it. This is a key distinction.

If you?ve read enough of my posts, you are probably aware of my fondness for the fantasy fiction of J. R. R. Tolkien. One of my favorite lines in his?The Lord of the Rings?comes from the wizard character Gandalf, during a futile argument with another wizard, Saruman, in which he says ?He who breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom.? It is important in applying this word?s genuine meaning to the analysis of physical things that we maintain the integrity of the system or thing that we study. We have to distinguish between breaking or destroying something to learn about it and disassembling it in such a way that we can restore its integrity. This also spurs a good ethical debate about our methods of securing samples for study in life science.

When we apply this action concept to an abstract discipline like mathematics, however, we can be more direct in our plan of attack, because there is no doubt that we can and will reassemble the parts of our problems in order to assure that our answers are sensible and correct. In analyzing math problems, we need to identify the various pieces of information that a problem provides and organize them in a clear and useful way.

Useful ways of organizing information depend on the nature of the problem. Here are some ways of organizing pieces of information in ways that might help us conduct effective analysis:

1.?Ranking according to importance.
2. Ranking according to relative magnitudes.
3. Constructing a timeline.
4. Constructing a two-dimensional map.
5. Constructing a three-dimensional map.
6. Constructing a flowchart.
7. Ranking according to centrality in a concept map or Venn Diagram.
8. Establishing a table based on a verbal model or algebraic formula and assigning data to rows and columns based on the relations we perceive.

There are certainly more ways to do this: we should teach several if not all of these to students and encourage them to develop their own methods of visualizing the relationships among various pieces of information in a problem. Remember that no two students learn the same thing in exactly the same way, and that, in a classroom where students collaborate and reflect together on their thought processes ? practicing a shared and external brand of metacognition ? every student benefits from pooling ideas during the learning process.

Note, too, that when problems that we must analyze come from a textbook or worksheet, students? reading skills are absolutely crucial to this step; if we present the problem orally, then listening skills are essential. If a student suffers from poor reading comprehension or listening skills for any reason, then that student is at a decisive disadvantage. We should all be quite familiar by now with multiple intelligences theory: the intelligence that supports student success in dealing with written math problems is linguistic intelligence, because the act of producing an analysis of the information in a written or spoken word problem is linguistic in every way that matters. Reading comprehension, fluency of every type, vocabulary, and a very sound appreciation of the impact of grammar, punctuation, and delivery on the meaning of communication are necessary skills for this kind of problem.

If our assessment relies too heavily on media and situations that only invoke linguistic intelligence, such as equivalent audio and text, then we?re not providing authentic assessment: we should try to do better in this department if we really want to see the Common Core deliver on its ambitions. Scientists, engineers, and researchers don?t face problems that come from the ?Problems? section of a textbook assignment. No one reads a new problem to them periodically so that they can work on it. Someone determines that there is a problem and commission data collection solution from these kinds of professionals.

Rarely if ever will a scientist, researcher, or engineer begin the problem-solving process with sufficient information to solve anything: occasionally it will seem to them that they begin with very little information, if any at all. These professionals gather the data they need for their work using sophisticated instruments, their senses, and their experiences. It is this ability to take an ill-defined situation or problem and secure the necessary information to make the product meaningful that is most crucial to research and innovation. This is one of the crucial keys to success for innovators trying to make new things and make old things better.

It?s silly to call word problems ?real-world? problems, because we never encounter the problems we must solve in adult professional life in that form. We?ll gather evidence from interviews, experiments, observations, research, conversations with colleagues, and our reflections on our own experiences ? including the expertise we developed in school. Where?s the textbook that puts students through all that to do a problem? A few seconds? reflection should also guide you to the conclusion that the tests our students take to gain admission to colleges and universities are completely inauthentic: the ACT and SAT math sections are full of exercises and novelty problems, making them challenging to finish in the allotted time, but in no way are those ?real-world? problems. I won?t even deign to mention the various state NCLB tests.

To get students to analyze information from problems in ways that will support deep and durable learning of both math content and various processes of analysis, we must at some point make the tasks they do more authentic. This was one of the primary motivations for the development of the Common Core.?If we can make our tasks authentic and engaging, we will see students analyzing information in many ways; if we can engage them in collaboration with peers or with us that includes debating the comparative advantages of different analytic methods, then we can foster metacognition.

Note that, in the context of a word problem that students read, we can nearly reduce the analysis process to a note-taking process. This isn?t going to help our students become good analyzers. If we can get students to do the authentic version of this, we once again have provided the answer to ?Why do we have to study math?? Recall that we have already developed one answer, the cultivation of the virtuous habit of perseverance. This post provides a second answer: ?to learn how to create and share analyses of information.?

I am, as my more frequent readers have surely noticed, in the habit of railing against industrial and bureaucratic notions when we foolishly apply them to education. We can find one of the phenomena that irritate teachers most about the industrial-bureaucratic ideas that have invaded education in recent years?in a?clich?: ?paralysis by analysis.? I?m not sure we can teach our students very many strategies for constructive problem-solving action that are more important than this: when we reach a circular process or a dead end in analyzing word-problem information, then we must restart the entire process and change aspects of our approach that we believe led the previous attempt off course.

Analyzing facts, constraints, relationships, and goals is a complex behavior for us to teach. Mathematics has its own culture which favors those who develop certain habits, and analyzing has a subculture which also favors certain habits. Chief among these is the ability to match the information to a standard model or to a new kind of model that we create for the given problem. If we can engage students in authentic problems that combine analytic practice with sophisticated methods of collecting information, then we will help them make tremendous progress in developing metacognitive habits and learning to work in the higher cognitive domains.

Lege, explora, cogita. Quaere verum.
