MOOCs diverge from traditional online courses which sought to duplicate the classroom experience, including approximate class size. In addition, the availability of open platforms enables a university to post content without incurring the cost of developing and maintaining the platform.

Online learning technologies will play an increasing role in creating new efficiencies and lowering the cost per student. Successful adoption enables educators to expand and diversify their student bodies and increase faculty scheduling flexibility and productivity.

Moody?s sees several possibilities for schools to earn revenue from MOOCs:

Potential new revenue opportunities are clear for the market leaders. Growth potential includes charging tuition for certificates or degrees, selling courses/content to other colleges, attracting paid advertising to the web site, and increased philanthropic/foundation support for these innovative initiatives. The use of proctored exams to verify a student?s identity and to reduce cheating paves the way for fee-based certificates or course credits. As an example, Udacity and edX have partnered with Pearson VUE testing centers to certify the learning outcomes of MOOCIt is easy to see the potential for MOOCs, but their lack of barriers to entry like application screening and fees can mean enormous up-front enrollments. This may not be a problem due to the automation of the technology platform, but graduation rates tend to be low.

Inside?Higher?Education?addressed the issue:

This was particularly true of edX?s first course, a virtual lab-based electrical engineering course called Circuits & Electronics: 155,000 students registered for the course when it opened in February, but only 23,000 earned a single point on the first problem set, and 9,300 passed the midterm. When the course ended, 8,200 students took the final. Just over 7,000 earned a passing grade and the option of receiving an informal certificate from edX.

But that complication was easily offset by the reach of the online course which had broad age diversity in enrollees. From?Inside?Higher?Ed:

The age distribution of students who stuck it out with Circuits & Electronics favored what higher ed would call ?nontraditional? students: Half of them were 26 years old or older. About 45 percent were traditional college-aged students, and 5 percent were in high school. The oldest probable-completer was 74; the youngest, 14.

Residence based programs at colleges generally attract traditional age students (18-22) so MOOCs, like their for-profit counterparts, can reach a much broader population of students.

Moody?s cautions residential, less selective colleges that don?t differentiate themselves:

The extent of longer term credit impacts on individual universities will vary widely. Most universities will likely gravitate to a mixed model that will increasingly feature online course delivery, though some colleges may choose to create a niche by remaining focused solely on the traditional residential classroom experience. The residential college model will certainly remain viable for reputable undergraduate institutions. Less selective, smaller colleges that are unable to join emerging networks or carve out an independent niche will likely experience credit stress driven by declining student demand.

The efficiencies offered through new technology have the potential to transform a university?s operations, academic and social programming, and pedagogical approach.

If Moody?s is accurate in its forecast, enormous changes in higher education will be coming down the pike:

The increasing prevalence of MOOCs, with enrollment that is exponentially larger than traditional residential classes or online courses, will drive explosive growth of online enrollment. In fall 2011, Stanford had courses with more than 100,000 students enrolled. While only 10% of the participants completed the courses, a single course reached more students than are typically enrolled in most private colleges and universities (median full-time equivalent enrollment for Moody?s rated private universities of 3,439 in fall 2011).

Online higher education 1.0 consisted of for-profit and non-profit colleges and universities providing virtual education that mirrored the classroom experience. It also included elite universities like Harvard and MIT providing free classes via YouTube and other platforms with no feedback loop or credentialing process. Online higher education 2.0 will likely see open classes combined with testing and credentialing processes resting on massive open source platforms. Imagine if this sparked a second renaissance for Western education.

Water cooler firm Angel Springs swings into action for golf fundraiser

Angel Springs has leant its support to a fundraising event supporting a south-west cardiac centre.
The leading water cooler supplier donated 100 sports cap bottles of water to the Dave Butcher Memorial Golf Day, which took place on Tuesday July 17.

As well as providing welcome refreshment for fundraisers that took part, Angel Springs made a cash donation of ?300 to the event.

?1,716 was raised in total, which was donated to Wessex Cardiac Centre through Wessex Heartbeat, a charity formed to support the work of the Centre.

Since it was first held in 2003, the Dave Butcher Memorial Golf Day has raised ?21,383.67 for the heart charity.

Wessex Cardiac Centre is one of the UK?s leading heart treatment centres, recognised as a Centre of Excellence for cardiac care.

Its catchment area covers most of central-southern England, Cornwall, Devon and the Channel Islands, and it treats more than 25,000 people each year.

1,000 of the patients admitted annually are babies and children, and around 250 of these will undergo surgery.

Though it receives support from the Southampton University Trust to cover its day-to-day running costs, the Centre relies on the money raised by Wessex Heartbeat to ensure it can continue to offer the best facilities and treatments for its patients.

Wessex Heatbeat has raised more than ?13 million since it was founded in 1992.

Chris Routledge, Angel Springs finance director, said: ?We were delighted to be able to help support a great charity by supporting a great golf day at a great golf club.

?Our thanks go to Dave Harrison and his family who, over the years, have raised thousands for Wessex Heartbeat by organising this annual event.

?We continue to look for opportunities to make a real difference through our charity initiatives on a number of levels, and hope to be able to support Dave again next year.?

Angel Springs has a history of charitable work ? only this year, the water cooler company has taken part in events supporting Ronald McDonald House Charities, Make-A-Wish Foundation and CureLeukaemia, amongst others.

It has recently set up a Customer Loyalty Scheme, making donations to Make-A-Wish Foundation when water bottles are purchased and water coolers are rented.

A Payroll Giving scheme was also set up by the water cooler supplier, allowing employees to make regular donations to Compton Hospice.

Anti-American protests have erupted in the Middle East over a crudely made film mocking the prophet Muhammad, resulting in violent embassy protests around the Middle East, fallout in the U.S. presidential campaign and heightened security at U.S. facilities abroad.

THE FILM: Fourteen-minute clips of the amateurish anti-Islam film "Innocence of Muslims" have been posted on YouTube. The clips depict the prophet Muhammad as a fraud, a womanizer and a madman in an overtly mocking way, showing him having sex and calling for massacres. Muslims find it offensive to depict Muhammad in any fashion, much less in an insulting way. Google Inc., owner of YouTube, has pulled down the video in Egypt, but it is still accessible in the U.S. and other countries. The film supposedly runs two hours. Film industry groups and permit agencies haven't been able to find records of a project called "Innocence of Muslims," though a Los Angeles film permit agency did find a record of a movie filmed in Los Angeles last year with the working title "Desert Warriors." The film apparently had a brief run at the Vine Theater, a faded Hollywood movie house. The YouTube clips are called "Muhammad Movie Trailer" and "The Real Life of Muhammad."

THE FILMMAKER: Federal authorities say the shadowy figure behind the film is Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, a California man once convicted of financial crimes and prohibited from using computers or the Internet as part of his sentence. Authorities have connected Nakoula to the persona of Sam Bacile, someone who initially claimed to The Associated Press to be the writer and director of the film. The YouTube clips were posted under the username "sam bacile." Nakoula told the AP in an interview Wednesday that he managed logistics for the company that made the film. He denied he was Bacile and said he didn't direct the film, though he said he knew Bacile. Bacile turned out to be a false identity, and the AP traced a cellphone number used by Bacile to a home where a reporter located Nakoula. Court papers in 2010 said Nakoula had many aliases, including Nicola Bacily, Robert Bacily and Erwin Salameh. The man identifying himself as Bacile claimed to be an Israeli Jew, but evidence shows he is a Coptic Christian. He told the AP he is a real estate developer, but his name does not appear in searches of California real estate licenses.

THE PROTESTS: The film has sparked assaults across the Middle East. In Libya on Tuesday, the storming of the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi killed the American ambassador, Chris Stevens, and three other embassy staff members. Libyan officials say the attack in Benghazi was a planned operation by heavily armed militants that may have been timed to mark the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks on the U.S. and that the militants used civilian protesters as cover for their action. In Egypt, angry youths climbed the walls of the U.S Embassy on Tuesday in Cairo and brought down the flag. In Yemen, hundreds of protesters angered by the film stormed the U.S. Embassy on Thursday in the capital of Sanaa and burned the American flag, chanting "death to America" and "death to Israel." In Iraq, several hundred Shiite hardliners protested Thursday in Baghdad's Shiite stronghold of Sadr City, and the leader of an Iranian-backed Shiite militia, Asaib Ahl al-Haq, threatened anti-U.S. attacks. And in Iran, about 50 protesters shouted, "Death to America" outside the Swiss Embassy, which looks after U.S. interests there. Riot police kept the crowd at bay.

THE VICTIMS: Four Americans were killed in the attack on the Embassy in Libya. Three Americans were wounded, U.S. officials said. Stevens, a 52-year-old career diplomat, died after he became separated from other American officials during the attack. The northern California native had been dispatched to Benghazi amid heavy fighting in April 2011. Also killed was Sean Smith, 34, an Air Force veteran who had worked as an information management officer for 10 years in diplomatic posts in Brussels, Baghdad and Pretoria, South Africa. Smith was well known in the online video game community. Another of the dead Americans has been identified by his family as Glen Doherty, a former Navy SEAL. Doherty's sister Kate Quigley told The Boston Globe her brother was working for a detail for a private security company when he died.

THE FALLOUT: Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney seized on the attacks Wednesday as an issue in the campaign, accusing President Barack Obama of apologizing for American values because of a conciliatory statement from the U.S. mission in Cairo. Romney said Obama's first reaction was to sympathize with the attackers rather than to condemn the attacks. The statement read: "The Embassy of the United States in Cairo condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims ? as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions." But it was issued to condemn anti-Muslim religious incitement as demonstrations against the film took place near the Cairo embassy and before demonstrators had breached the embassy walls ? and even before the attack in Libya. The GOP nominee came under fire for his comments; Obama said in an interview with CBS News' "60 Minutes" that the episode showed Romney's penchant for having "a tendency to shoot first and aim later." Romney toned down his criticism Thursday and tried to shift the campaign focus back to the economy. Obama, meanwhile, ordered increased security at American embassies and consulates around the world Thursday following the attack and urged its citizens abroad to be vigilant. His administration sent two warships to the Libyan coast, ready to respond to any mission ordered by the president, and 50 Marines were sent to the Libyan capital of Tripoli to help with security. Obama told voters campaigning Thursday in Colorado that the Benghazi Consulate killers will be brought to justice and that protecting Americans serving abroad is one of his highest priorities.

How to Be Single & Love It

It has taken me a while, but I have finally learned how to be single and love it. My happiness doesn?t depend on having a boyfriend or wanting to please a man. Instead, I feel more sensual and powerful than ever. That is, of course, after having gone through all the stages of love: having a crush, dating, breakup, grief, rage, apathy, the desire to have a man, the relief of living on my own, the desperate need to have a man again? And finally, acceptance. Now I know what I?m worth and what I want in a relationship. That makes me stronger and less of a pushover. I no longer beg for love.

Of course I?d still love to meet The One. But you can bet my marital status won?t determine how happy I am today. And it seems I?m not the only one who thinks so. According to a recent government report, nearly 40% of women in the US aged 15-44 have never been married, and even fewer are in a first marriage. The highest percentage of women who have never married are African-American (55%), followed by US-born Hispanics (49%).

So, are we women finally embracing singlehood? That doesn?t mean that we don?t want true love, though. Quite the contrary, it may imply that we are willing to wait for true love for as long as it takes to find it, and not settle for less than we know we deserve.

GIVE HAPPINESS A CHANCE
Once you get over a breakup and overcome the social stigma of being single, you?ll start feeling such joy that you will only want more of that feeling as time goes by. Hang on to that! Enjoy the pleasure of your freedom, of doing whatever you want to. Revel in not having to put up with someone who makes you feel anxious, unhappy or that there?s something wrong with you. Be gentle on yourself, as it may take a while to learn to be happy without a man. As Latinas, many of us have been raised with the idea that it?s our duty to lead our lives devoted to a man and raising a family.

HAVE A BFF (OR TWO OR THREE!)
As a single lady, it?s vital to build a strong network of good friends. You need to know there is someone with whom you can share your dreams and goals but also your doubts and your fears. We all need to share moments of intimacy, whether it is with a significant other or a best friend. If you are a single mami, that network of friends becomes even more important!

ACCEPT YOUR MIXED FEELINGS
You may feel you?re the happiest single woman on earth one day, and the poor spinster who will die all alone, only to have her body devoured by her dogs the next. And that?s okay. It?s normal to sometimes envy your seemingly happily married friends. But know that they too have mixed feelings about being in a relationship, and may sometimes envy your singlehood. Interact with your married friends, discuss the pros and cons of both sides of the coin, and then take advantage of your solitude to reflect.

HAVE A LIFE
Do not put your life on hold until you find The One. What if he never shows up? Would you want to waste your whole life waiting? How sad! Do the things you want to do, even if that includes buying a house, taking a dream vacation or having a baby.

DON?T GIVE UP ON LOVE
The desperate search for love can be as harmful as giving up on it and then numbing your feelings by working to the point of exhaustion, indulging in compulsive shopping, drinking or being dangerously promiscuous. The healthiest attitude is to be open to meeting someone while you keep on making your own plans and live your life.

KNOW WHY YOU ARE SINGLE
Are you single because you really want to? Or are you sabotaging your relationships on purpose? Do you just not know how to make a relationship last? Be brave and find out the reasons why you are single. Being happily soltera because you prefer to be alone rather than in ill company is very different from erecting emotional barriers around you because you?re afraid of getting hurt.

BECOME THE WOMAN OF YOUR LIFE
I?m pretty certain you have an image of your dream guy, and have perhaps even made a list of his traits. But, where do you stand? Do you live up to the standards that you seek in a soul mate? If not, take the necessary steps to embody the amazing woman that you know you can be. Like attracts like, so if you become the best version of yourself while enjoying singlehood, when you meet The One, he will most likely mirror who you are. And that, my friends, greatly enhances your odds of having a long-lasting fulfilling relationship. I just don't think this relationship is the right one for the two of you. I think a woman with as many insecurities as she has (with or without reason, not making a judgement) should NOT be in a long-distance relationship. I think YOU need to be with someone who is more open and trusting like yourself; it will make your life a LOT smoother.

Psychopathic boldness tied to US presidential success

The fearless dominance associated with psychopathy may be an important predictor of U.S. presidential performance, suggests an analysis published this week in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology.

"Certain psychopathic traits may be like a double-edged sword," says lead author Scott Lilienfeld, a psychologist at Emory University. "Fearless dominance, for example, may contribute to reckless criminality and violence, or to skillful leadership in the face of a crisis."

In fact, fearless dominance, linked to diminished social and physical apprehensiveness, appears to correlate with better-rated presidential performance for leadership, persuasiveness, crisis management and Congressional relations, the analysis showed.

Theodore Roosevelt ranked highest in fearless dominance, followed by John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, Rutherford Hayes, Zachary Taylor, Bill Clinton, Martin Van Buren, Andrew Jackson and George W. Bush.

The analysis drew upon personality assessments of 42 presidents, up to George W. Bush, compiled by Steven Rubenzer and Thomas Faschingbauer for their book "Personality, Character and Leadership in the White House." More than 100 experts, including biographers, journalists and scholars who are established authorities on one or more U.S. presidents, evaluated their target presidents using standardized psychological measures of personality, intelligence and behavior.

For rankings on various aspects of job performance, the analysis relied primarily on data from two large surveys of presidential historians: One conducted by C-SPAN in 2009 and a second conducted by Siena College in 2010.

The rich historical data on presidents, combined with detailed expert rankings, provided a window into an emerging theory that some aspects of psychopathy may actually be positive adaptations in certain social situations.

"The way many people think about mental illness is too cut-and-dried," Lilienfeld says. "Certainly, full-blown psychopathy is maladaptive and undesirable. But what makes the psychopathic personality so interesting is that it's not defined by a single trait, but a constellation of traits."

A clinical psychopath encompasses myriad characteristics, such as fearless social dominance, self-centered impulsivity, superficial charm, guiltlessness, callousness, dishonesty and immunity to anxiety. Each of these traits lies along a continuum, and all individuals may exhibit one of more of these traits to some degree.

"You can think of it like height and weight," Lilienfeld explains. "Everyone has some degree of both, and they're continuously distributed in the population."

The results of the analysis raise the possibility that the boldness often associated with psychopathy may confer advantages over a variety of occupations involving power and prestige, from politics to business, law, athletics and the military.

The findings also add to the debate over the idea of the so-called "successful psychopath," an individual with psychopathic traits who rises to a position of power in the workplace.

"We believe more research is needed into the implications of boldness for leadership in general," Lilienfeld says.

The analysis found that the link between fearless dominance and political performance was linear, Lilienfeld notes, but he added that at the extremes, boldness might veer into a form of recklessness that would be detrimental.

The researchers also looked at presidential scores for self-centered impulsivity, which in contrast to boldness, was linked to some negative job performance indicators, including Congressional impeachment resolutions, tolerating unethical behavior in subordinates and negative character.

Theodore Roosevelt, for instance, ranked the highest for fearless dominance, but lower than average for self-centered impulsivity, suggesting that he was far from being psychopathic.

Lyndon Johnson, however, ranked relatively high for fearless dominance (15th) and was among the top-five scorers for self-centered impulsivity. "That's consistent with what we know about Johnson," Lilienfeld says. "He was a very dominant, socially bold person, at times even ruthless about getting his way. In some sense, these traits may have made him an effective leader, able to push through civil rights legislation, but they may not have been so positive in terms of personal relationships."
