Research manuscript submissions: Initial rejection may lead to higher impact, study shows

ScienceDaily (Oct. 12, 2012) ? A large-scale survey of the process for submitting research papers to scientific journals has revealed a surprising pattern: manuscripts that were turned down by one journal and published in another received significantly more citations than those that were published by the first journal to receive them.

The study, led by researchers at McGill University and published by the journal Science, covered papers carried in 923 journals from the biological sciences between 2006 and 2008. The researchers generated an email to the corresponding authors of virtually all articles published during that period in 16 subject categories. This computerized survey retrieved the submission history of more than 80,000 articles -- 37% of the more than 215,000 articles covered by the survey.

The findings shed new light on pre-publication processes, which constitute a significant amount of the time allocated to scientific research. Roughly three-quarters of all articles were initially targeted to the journal that would eventually publish them, indicating that authors were generally efficient at targeting their research and limiting the risk of rejection. Surprisingly, however, articles that were rejected by one journal and resubmitted to another were significantly more cited than "first-intent" articles published the same year in the same journal.

"We think the most likely explanation is that inputs from editors and peer reviewers, and the greater amount of time spent working on resubmissions, makes papers better and improves the citation impact of the final product," said Vincent Calcagno, who initiated the project as a postdoctoral fellow in theoretical ecology at McGill and completed it after moving to France's Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique. Calcagno co-authored the paper with Prof. Claire de Mazancourt, his former supervisor at McGill's Redpath Museum who is now working for the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in France, as well as Emilie Demoinet of McGill's Department of Biology; then-undergraduate student Kathleen Gollner; Prof. Derek Ruths of McGill's Department of Computer Science and Lionel Guidi of the University of Hawaii.

The findings also suggest that researchers may benefit from the strategy of publishing groups that facilitate resubmission of declined manuscripts to other journals of the group. "These results should help authors endure the frustration associated with long resubmission processes and encourage them to take the challenge," the researchers conclude.

One notable caveat: the survey found that papers resubmitted from a journal in one discipline category to a journal in a different category yielded lower impact after publication than those resubmitted to the same discipline category. While many academic experts have been calling for more interdisciplinary research, "what this suggests is that, for some reason, there may be barriers to this kind of interdisciplinary work gaining the same degree of impact as research done and published within their own (academic) communities" Prof. Ruths noted.

Daredevil's Record-Breaking Supersonic Skydive Attempt Now Set for Sunday

An Austrian daredevil aims to leap from the stratosphere Sunday (Oct. 14) in a supersonic plunge that would break the world record for the highest-ever skydive ??a benchmark that has lasted more than half a century.

Veteran skydiver Felix Baumgartner had hoped to have the nearly 23-mile-high (37 kilometers) jump under his belt by now, but strong winds thwarted attempts?on both Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 8 and 9). On Sunday, however, winds may be calm enough to allow the skydiver's towering high-altitude balloon to lift off from its staging ground in Roswell, N.M., according to officials with Baumgartner's mission, which is known as Red Bull Stratos.

?I like what I see on Sunday," Red Bull Stratos meteorologist Don Day said in a statement today (Oct. 12). "It will again be a matter of what happens with the winds on the top (700-800 feet). We may still have to wait and the window will likely be open until 11 a.m. We need to be ready for launch just after sunrise [about 6:45 a.m. local time]."

You can watch the skydive live here on SPACE.com.

Winds are a big concern for the mission because Baumgartner's 55-story balloon is extremely thin and easily damaged. The team will not launch if winds at the launch site exceed 2 mph (3.2 kph), officials have said. [Extreme Skydive from 120,000 Feet Animated (Video)]

Indeed, one of the mission's balloons was rendered unusable after being whipped about by gusts on Tuesday. The weather had looked good in the morning, so the balloon was inflated and Baumgartner climbed into his custom-built 2,900-pound (1,315-kilogram) capsule. But winds kicked up to 25 mph (40 kph) briefly shortly before noon, twisting the balloon and scuttling the launch.

The team has a backup balloon ready for the next attempt, officials said.

If things go according to plan on Sunday, Baumgartner will ascend to about 120,000 feet (36,576 meters), then step out into the frigid void. He would thus shatter the current skydiving altitude record, which stands at 102,800 feet (31,333 m). That mark was set back in 1960 by U.S. Air Force Capt. Joe Kittinger, who now serves as a Red Bull Stratos adviser.

Baumgartner should become the first skydiver to break the sound barrier as he plummets to Earth in a 5.5-minute freefall (followed by a 15-minute parachute glide to Earth), officials say. So Sunday would be an appropriate day for his leap; it's the 65th anniversary of the first-ever supersonic airplane flight, flown by American test pilot Chuck Yeager.

Baumgartner will also likely set marks for longest-duration freefall and highest manned balloon flight. But the mission isn't all about breaking records, Red Bull Stratos officials say. It has scientific value as well, collecting data that could help enable high-altitude escapes from spacecraft.

Red Bull Stratos has called the mission a leap from the "edge of space." But space is generally considered to begin at an altitude of 62 miles (100 km; about 327,000 feet).

Clinton lends star power to Democratic candidates

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Twelve years after leaving the White House, Bill Clinton is campaigning as if he's in the political race of his life.

In some ways, he is. Clinton is endorsing President Barack Obama and Democrats in tight races for the House and Senate. But he's also burnishing a legacy as the party's elder statesman, rock star, global humanitarian and husband of Hillary Rodham Clinton, a once-and-perhaps-future presidential candidate herself.

In Indianapolis on Friday to boost Senate Democratic hopeful Joe Donnelly, Clinton said he hadn't expected to be so involved in the 2012 campaign. But Hillary Clinton is busy as secretary of state, and daughter Chelsea works for a broadcast network, he noted.

"So you're stuck with me," Clinton told the crowd.

Obama and other Democrats ? maybe even Clinton himself ? wouldn't have it any other way.

Bitter at the way Al Gore campaigned largely without him in 2000, Clinton has become Obama's surrogate in chief in a nationwide campaign tour, lending his oratorical skill and folksy style to increasingly personal contests in races that, four weeks out, show few signs of budging. Clinton is especially helpful in conservative states where Democratic candidates aren't eager to appear with the unpopular Obama. Clinton is a leading expert in the art of the political comeback ? a skill the struggling Obama could use now.

Also, there's this uncomfortable truth: Obama needs Clinton to generate support with white, working-class and independent voters who were drawn to Clinton and Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney ? but who haven't warmed to Obama.

"If there's one thing we've learned in this election season, by the way, it is that a few words from Bill Clinton can do a man a lot of good," Romney joked in his own speech at the Clinton Global Initiative last month, a nod to Clinton's convention speech.

Obama himself has cracked that he should appoint Clinton "secretary of explaining stuff."

The lighthearted tone and determined cooperation between Obama and Clinton is hard-won and may not end with the 2012 campaign.

The bruising 2008 Democratic primary between Obama and Hillary Clinton damaged relations between the families. Obama's appointment of Hillary Clinton to serve as his secretary of state ? and her successes in the job ? healed the relationship enough for Clinton to step in to help with Obama's re-election. And if Obama has Bill Clinton to thank for a second term, one way to pay back the debt could be Obama's support for a Hillary Clinton campaign of the future.

Among voters generally, Bill Clinton is more appealing than Obama. A CBS News/New York Times poll in September found 66 percent of registered voters with a favorable view of Clinton, compared with 45 percent for Obama.

"He's got a way of communicating complex ideas in plain ways that no one else has," said Greg Haas, who ran Clinton's 1992 campaign in Ohio and who is Democratic chairman in Franklin County, which includes Columbus. "No one in my lifetime. He's in a class by himself."

Clinton symbolizes good economic times for many voters, including a federal budget that was balanced under his leadership. His convention speech rebutted Romney's attacks on Obama and accused Romney of pushing an economic plan that is doomed to fail. Clinton lends Obama credibility on the issue that voters consistently name as their top concern: the economy.

Clinton rocketed out of the party's convention in Charlotte, N.C., last month energized by the massive crowd's roaring reaction to his partly ad-libbed call to arms. His star newly shined, Clinton plunged into a two-day swing in the key state of Florida and has since added stops for Obama in a string of political battlegrounds.

During one recent week, Clinton joined Obama at a meeting with about a dozen supporters at a private residence in Los Angeles; he hosted a fundraiser with about 160 people who bought tickets starting at $1,000; he spoke at a rally for four northern California Democrats in tight House races; he was in Nevada for a rally for Obama and Democratic Senate candidate Shelley Berkley; and he was at Arizona State University rally with Democratic Senate candidate Richard Carmona. Then came stops in Iowa and Indiana for more rallies with Senate and congressional candidates as well as fundraising events.

He's expected to keep up the pace until Election Day.

All told, Clinton has appeared at no fewer than 32 fundraisers and 15 rallies for Obama. One big-ticket reception at a private New York City residence with Clinton last June drew 47 people who paid $40,000 apiece. On Friday, he joined Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., for a Detroit-area fundraiser that her campaign said brought in about $350,000 for Michigan Democrats.

During a recent Las Vegas rally for Obama and other Democratic candidates, Clinton showcased his ability to poke fun at foes without demonizing them. He mocked Romney's move to the political center in the opening presidential debate.

"I had a different reaction to that first debate than a lot of people did," Clinton told the crowd. "I thought, 'Wow, here's old moderate Mitt. Where ya been, boy?'"

Clinton is also building favor with local Democrats, many of whom are longtime allies.

"He generates a huge amount of media attention when he's visiting these states," said Fergus Cullen, a former New Hampshire GOP state party chairman.

Cullen said Clinton's visit earlier this year to New Hampshire to endorse Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Maggie Hassan, a Clinton ally in 2008, provided a stamp of party establishment approval that helped Hassan win her competitive primary.

Yet Clinton's prominent campaign role could pose some potential downsides for Democrats. Some Democrats fret Clinton could overshadow Obama. A Pew Research Center poll last month showed 29 percent of those surveyed said Clinton's convention speech was the highlight of the party gathering, while just 16 percent called Obama's speech the highlight.

But there's no hiding the Clinton magic during an election year.

In Indianapolis on Friday, the former president noted that he had stayed the night before in Washington with Hillary, celebrating their 37th wedding anniversary. He recalled that she told him she wished she could come with him to campaign this year.

One of the event organizers had apologized to the former president for the size of the crowd, saying "that's as good as we can do for a crowd here except for a basketball game."

Clinton, famously fond of a crowd of any size, grinned.

"I'll take that," he said.

Facebook to ask your OK before sharing actions

36 min.

Tired of Facebook sharing every little article you read or song you?listen to, using its "Open Graph" system? So is Facebook, apparently.?Apps will soon need user permission to share "like," "follow," "listen," "read" or "watch" actions, according to product engineer Henry Zhang, who posted the new rules on?Facebook's developer blog.

"In order to provide users with experiences that meet their expectations, we will no longer approve custom actions that publish stories as people consume content," he wrote. "These apps must use the appropriate?built-in actions?or create a different sharing experience."

"Apps that help people automatically share stories about content as they consume it, such as the music you are listening to, can be good experiences when apps create clear expectations for the user of what is being shared and when," Zhang wrote. "When apps automatically publish stories on a person?s behalf in a way that is unexpected, such as when they browse an online store, it can surprise and confuse people."

The change is to take place "in the next 90 days," Zhang said.

Meanwhile, Facebook stories that lead with images and location are being made "more prominent" in Facebook's news feeds and Timeline, Zhang said.

"In early tests, the new image-led stories have shown 70 percent more clicks for apps that provide high quality, relevant imagery with low spam rates," Zhang wrote. "In certain cases, we have seen these stories generate up to 50x more Likes than equivalent story types from before. The new location stories provide double-digit gains in distribution to apps."

The Open Graph?changes may be welcome, but they're not totally altruistic: Facebook will annoy fewer of its users, but its goal is probably to be better "liked" by the Federal Trade Commission. The agency?recently settled charges with Facebook over deceiving consumers and making them share more personal info they they intended.

The settlement requires Facebook to get user consent for?some changes to privacy settings, and also subjects the site to 20 years of independent audits.

Letters with Pooh for iPhone and iPad review

Letters with Pooh for iPhone and iPad review

Letters with Pooh is an educational app for the iPhone and iPad by Disney to help kids identify and write letters of the alphabet. Your kids will join Winnie Pooh on his quest for honey by tracing letters, collecting letter balloons, finding missing letters, and more. Letters with Pooh is very interactive and even lets you personalize the experience by allowing you to record all the leters of the alphabet in your voice.

Letters with Pooh begins with a quick little backstory about how Winnie the Pooh has a rumbly in his tummy and that instead of focusing on his busy day ahead, he will first let his rumbly tummy lead the way. Each chapter will progress through Pooh's story, making the whole experience more interesting for young learners.

The first chapter teaches about the basics of tracing and has you trace simple shapes like lines and circles in a way that directly helps Winnie the Pooh during the story.

In the second chapter, Pooh needs balloons to reach a beehive for honey. To help him, you must trace letters -- each letter you trace gives Pooh another balloon. Letters with Pooh does not require you to get the tracing job perfect in order to progress which is great for early learners who will probably struggle with staying in the lines. At the end of each letter tracing, a word that starts with that letter will be said and a picture associated with that word will be displayed. You then have the option to record your own voice saying the name of the letter.

As you progress through the letters, the game will periodically check in with Winnie the Pooh to see if he needs more balloons. Each time, Pooh says he needs to get a little bit higher and is floating off the ground with a growing handful of balloons that slowly brings him higher off the ground with more balloons. Once you've successfully traced all the letters, Winnie the Pooh will get high enough to reach the honey.

In the last chapter of Letters with Pooh, Winnie the Pooh must help Tigger find the letters that have fallen out of his book, Piglet with his paint-by-letters picture, and Owl with catching letters.

As you progress through the game, you'll hear the narrator congratulate you on earning more stickers that can be used in the Stickers section of Letters with Pooh. The section is all about having fun and includes stickers for characters and letters.

The good

  • Practice tracing and writing upper- and lowercase letters to help Pooh find honey
  • Record all the letters of the alphabet in your own voice
  • Play fun, character-driven activities that reinforce letter identification
  • Create your own Winnie the Pooh scenes with interactive stickers
  • Guided skill instruction for up to four players
  • Comprehensive parents' section with content leveling and progress monitoring
  • Whimsical Winnie the Pooh artwork
  • Professional narration, music and charming sound effects
  • Universal for iPhone and ipad

The bad

  • If you trace letters in the "wrong" direction, it doesn't really work right
  • Must lift your finger to start the next part of the letter tracing. For example, to trace the letter W, all four sections of the letter are different and if you don't lift your finger between each section, your tracing will not be registered
  • iPhone version doesn't support the iPhone 5's larger display, yet

The bottom line

Letters with Pooh is an excellent alphabet learning app for iPhone and iPad. Disney did a great job with its design by making it interactive, fun, and by including the voices of the characters from Winnie the Pooh. If you have a child who's learning his/her alphabet and loves Winnie the Pooh, you can't go wrong with Letters with Pooh.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama sought Wednesday to reassure hand-wringing Democrats in the wake of his lackluster first debate, declaring, "I got this."

Party loyalists, in Washington and in battleground states, are fretting that Obama's campaign has been slow to rebound after his debate last week against Republican challenger Mitt Romney. They're worried that the Democratic ticket isn't being aggressive enough in blocking Romney's new pivot to the political center. And they fear Romney's recent effort to show a softer side gives him an opening with female voters, who are crucial to the president's re-election prospects.

"I'm not feeling very positive," said Awilda Marquez, a prominent Democrat in Colorado. "I know that it's only the first debate, but he can't seem to change the relentless negative coverage. Romney has been able to take control."

Her nervousness was echoed by other Democrats in interviews across the country just before the next opportunity to get the Obama campaign back on track ? Vice President Joe Biden's debate Thursday against Republican Paul Ryan.

Obama's campaign, seeking to address some of the concerns, launched a fresh critique of Romney Wednesday for saying he wouldn't pursue abortion-related legislation as president. Obama aides accused the Republican of "hiding" his positions of earlier in the year in order to gain women's votes.

The president's team says no major changes are expected in his own re-election strategy. Nevertheless, the president and his aides are seeking to reassure anxious Democrats that key factors are still in their favor.

"By next week, I think a lot of the hand-wringing will be complete because we're going to go ahead and win this thing," Obama said in an interview with radio host Tom Joyner. Projecting confidence, Obama said, "I got this."

The president appears to maintain a narrow lead in polling in many battleground states and has more pathways than Romney to reach the 270 Electoral College votes required to win the White House. Also, more Democrats than Republicans are registered to vote in swing states like Florida and Nevada. And last Friday's dip in the nation's unemployment rate to 7.8 percent gave some credence to Obama's core argument that the economy is slowly but surely recovering.

But there's little doubt that the burst of momentum Obama enjoyed last month has come to a halt following the first debate. That's given Romney ample opportunity to rebound from a dismal September with just four weeks until Election Day and millions of Americans already casting early votes. Polls taken after the debate show the race tightening nationally and in key states, though both parties say the president maintains an edge in such crucial states as Ohio and Virginia.

The rumblings in the Democratic ranks focus largely on whether the campaign has been aggressive enough coming out of the first debate, particularly in accusing Romney of lying about his positions and abandoning the conservative policies he embraced during the GOP primary.

Several strategists said they were perplexed that the campaign, nearing $1 billion in fundraising, wasn't churning out television advertisements juxtaposing clips of Romney from earlier in the year with his comments during the debate. That's allowing Romney, they say, to get away with shifting to the center.

"I don't believe you ever let a charge go unanswered, so in that respect I wish they were more forceful," said Chuck Ardo, a former spokesman for ex-Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell.

Other Democrats fear the debate fallout is leading to softening support for the president among women, long one of his strengths.

Romney is making a clear play for female voters coming out of the debate, sprinkling personal anecdotes into his speeches in an attempt to appear more empathetic. The Republican also said this week that he would not pursue any abortion-related legislation if elected.

Obama aides dispute much of the criticism of their tactics, pointing to their rapid response to Romney's apparent shift on abortion.

"We're not saying he's changed his mind on these issues," said Stephanie Cutter, Obama's deputy campaign manager. "We're saying he's trying to cover up his beliefs."

The president's support among female registered voters dropped 5 percentage points following the debate, according to Gallup surveys. But he still leads Romney 51 percent to 43 percent among women. The Republican's support among registered female voters is up 2 points since the debate.

Democratic pollster Stan Greenberg raised alarms this week about the potential for softening in Obama's support among women. He said his post-debate research found unmarried women in particular were not swayed by Obama's economic arguments but were open to Romney's approach.

"There was a positive response of these voters to Romney identifying with the middle class and their struggle and a very strong response to Romney's five-point economic plan," Greenberg said.

That marked a shift from last month, according to the pollster. Many unmarried women responded positively to Obama's message during the Democratic convention and were particularly offended by Romney's comments in a leaked fundraising video about 47 percent of voters who don't pay federal income tax and feel they are victims.

Obama never raised Romney's remarks during the debate, to the dismay of many Democrats.

The president's campaign did on Tuesday release its first ad since the debate incorporating Romney's comments on the 47 percent. The 30-second spot focused on seniors, arguing that some of the "victims" Romney referred to were seniors receiving Medicare.

Despite the Democratic worries, officials at Obama's Chicago campaign headquarters say their approach to the final weeks of the campaign has always hinged on a tight race.

"We never anticipated winning battleground states by 10 points and can't imagine winning a ton of them by 5 points," said Ben LaBolt, Obama's campaign spokesman. "Our task is to lay out the economic choice every day for undecideds and to turn out our supporters."

For some Democrats, who sensed some in the party getting overconfident before the debate, a case of the nerves may not be such a bad thing.

"I'd rather get a jolt four weeks out than a week out when there's still time to do something about this," said Karen Finney, a Democratic strategist.

Testing Aids Memory in a Variety of Ways | Psych Central News

Testing Aids Memory in a Variety of Ways Across the country a high-stakes debate rages on the value of educational testing to measure student achievement.

Use of standardized tests to measure skill obtainment has been backed by many business and industry leaders and reflects the No Child Left Behind Act Act of 2002 that requires mandatory testing in all 50 states.

New psychological research looks at the testing process and how it can help us learn and retain new information over the long term and apply it across different contexts.

Investigators discovered subtle differences between testing, memory, and learning and believe knowledge of the intricacies can aid testing in educational settings.

The first study reviews the ubiquitous multiple-choice test. A common criticism of this testing format is that they expose test takers to the correct answer among the available options. This means that you only have to recognize the correct answer and don?t have to rely on retrieval processes that are known to enhance later recall.

Psychological scientist Jeri Little, Ph.D.,?and her colleagues investigated whether multiple-choice tests could actually be designed to call upon these retrieval processes.

If the alternative answers are all plausible enough, they hypothesized, test takers would have to retrieve information about why correct alternatives are correct and also about why incorrect alternatives are incorrect in order to be able to distinguish between the two.

In two experiments, the researchers found that properly constructed multiple-choice tests can, in fact, trigger productive retrieval processes. They also found that multiple-choice tests had one potentially important advantage over tests in which only the question is presented.

Both kinds of tests helped test takers remember the information they been tested on, but only the multiple-choice tests helped them recall information related to incorrect alternatives. These findings suggest that multiple-choice tests can be constructed in ways that exercise the very retrieval processes they have been accused of bypassing.

Studies have also shown that having to retrieve information during a test helps you remember that information later on. But most research on this ?testing effect? has measured the ability to recall information in the form of a final test that?s similar to the initial test.

In a different study, researchers investigated if testing might also promote the application ? or transfer ? of learning. To begin this study, Shana Carpenter, Ph.D.,?performed a literature review of recent studies as related to the benefits of testing on our ability to transfer information across multiple contexts, test formats, and knowledge domains.

Carpenter discovered that the few studies on this topic have, so far, reported robust benefits of testing on the transfer of learning. She highlights the need for research that explores the potential of tests to promote not just the direct retention of information, but also the application of knowledge to new situations.

Scientists investigated another perspective associated with learning as they sought to understand why repeated testing leads to better long-term memory for information than does repeated study.

Psychological scientist Peter Verkoeijen, Ph.D.,?and his colleagues hypothesized that studying may strengthen the aspects of a memory trace that pertain to the way words look and sound, while testing may strengthen the aspects of a memory trace that have to do with the meaning of words.

In this study, researchers had Dutch-English bilingual participants learn several lists of words in Dutch. In some instances they were tested after an initial study period (test condition), and in others they were told to study the list again (restudy condition). Participants? memory for the words was then tested in Dutch or English.

The main finding shows that participants in the test condition were better at recognizing the words they had been told to learn when they took the final test in English (across-language) but not when they took the final test in Dutch (within-language).

These results suggests that using a test as a method of learning ? strengthening the meaning of words ? was useful for the participants when they weren?t able to rely on the visual or phonological familiarity of words because the words were presented in different languages. The results lend support to the researchers? hypothesis that restudying and testing strengthen memory in different ways.

A concluding study investigated the role of information retrieval of information (from memory) and the learning process.

In the study, Jeffrey Karpicke, Ph.D.,?argues that retrieval processes play a central role in the active process of learning as it happens. Karpicke outlines the retrieval-based learning perspective and discusses the role of retrieval in learning, the means by which it can enhance learning over the long-term, and the ways in which it can help to promote meaningful learning.
