Bruce Davis, Ph.D.: Silent Retreat: Release Your Creativity

Great writers, thinkers, innovators begin in silence. Inspiration, the romance of life blossoms out of silence. Creative people in all walks of life seek silence as their laboratory to make a new world. The next steps in life, art, business, science call for realizing our golden potential. In silence, our world opens to this goldenness, what is life giving and true. A silent retreat is free time where simple being and inner stillness conspire to light up our minds with the light of our soul.

The best of our creativity emerges out of the valleys and mountaintops of the silence inside of us. Artists, couples, small teams of innovators in all fields routinely go into and listen to the voice that is clearly heard in silence. We retreat from the busy world that pushes and pulls our attention elsewhere. In silence we can concentrate on being open for the unexpected. Silence helps form the questions so the answers can come. Silence clears the plate so the creative process is front and center, here and now.

Silence and creativity are perfect partners. Silence gives to our creativity, and creativity gives to what we find in the silence. A tapestry of trust develops where the unseen can be given form, the unknown can be discovered. The creative process is most at work when there is silence outside and peace and quiet within. In the deep and pure well of our being, real creativity takes place. Whether it is the next step for our life, a romantic relationship, writing a book, business venture, or scientific innovation, an atmosphere of silence is where all of our inner resources can gather, be, and multiply. On silent retreat we are without distraction, disturbance, and conflicting responsibilities. Silence enters the psyche and heart, and brings forth the natural clarity, openness, and availability of our awareness.

The first step in a silent retreat is to not rush into the creativity. Give ourselves, our attention, to the gifts of the silence. Typically people rush into their creative process thinking the silence is a nice background. No, silence is more than a background. In meditation, silence touches our inner stillness. It is from here real answers come. When coming into retreat we want to take some hours or, if possible, days for the silence to clear a way, cleanse our internal laboratory, empty our writer's page, remove our emotional backlog so real creativity, new ideas can come forward. The creative spirit is present. It is everything else that is also present that is the problem. Silence can break open the fortress of our rationality and practicality. The fresh air of silence is beautiful to breathe. Smell the fragrance of life without the busyness and noise of the world. Here is our creativity. It is very powerful to spend time in the source of our creativity, our inner stillness. We cannot be in this inner school of being too often or too much.

The second step is when silence, intention, imagination, intuition all work together. They form the inner setting, the platform where the new is really new and not just a new covering for something old and tried. Seclusion, nature, meditation get us out of our routine, out of the box for peak experiences. We want to dream without fear of judgment or criticism. In silence, our soul communicates to us. When great writers sit down to write, they crash through the wall of self into the vast silence. Here pen and paper dance, fight, struggle, and dance again until there is surrender and sweetness. Silence finds the divine wisdom in each of us.

Step three is when the creative process and the practical world come together. Silence can help here as well. We don't want to rush into putting our inspiration into production. Let us hold the new in our hands and heart silently and let it sit for a while. If it is true, a path will unfold. The silence is the perfect scale for measuring truth. Silence brings us to the place inside where creativity grows from our true ground of being. Our left and right brain, intuitive and intellectual knowing, light up, weave, and crisscross all borders and boundaries in silence. When quality, life serving, purposefulness is sought, silence releases the heart intelligence and chemistry necessary. A new world is being born out of the frontier of inner silence and creative wisdom.

New type of microchip created which not only moves information from left to right and back to front, but up and down as well

Scientists from the University of Cambridge have created, for the first time, a new type of microchip which allows information to travel in three dimensions. Currently, microchips can only pass digital information in a very limited way - from either left to right or front to back. The research was published today, 31 January, in Nature.

Dr Reinoud Lavrijsen, an author on the paper from the University of Cambridge, said: "Today's chips are like bungalows everything happens on the same floor. We've created the stairways allowing information to pass between floors."

Researchers believe that in the future a 3D microchip would enable additional storage capacity on chips by allowing information to be spread across several layers instead of being compacted into one layer, as is currently the case.

For the research, the Cambridge scientists used a special type of microchip called a spintronic chip which exploits the electron's tiny magnetic moment or 'spin' (unlike the majority of today's chips which use charge-based electronic technology). Spintronic chips are increasingly being used in computers, and it is widely believed that within the next few years they will become the standard memory chip.

To create the microchip, the researchers used an experimental technique called 'sputtering'. They effectively made a club-sandwich on a silicon chip of cobalt, platinum and ruthenium atoms. The cobalt and platinum atoms store the digital information in a similar way to how a hard disk drive stores data. The ruthenium atoms act as messengers, communicating that information between neighbouring layers of cobalt and platinum. Each of the layers is only a few atoms thick.

They then used a laser technique called MOKE to probe the data content of the different layers. As they switched a magnetic field on and off they saw in the MOKE signal the data climbing layer by layer from the bottom of the chip to the top. They then confirmed the results using a different measurement method.

Professor Russell Cowburn, lead researcher of the study from the Cavendish Laboratory, the University of Cambridge's Department of Physics, said: "Each step on our spintronic staircase is only a few atoms high. I find it amazing that by using nanotechnology not only can we build structures with such precision in the lab but also using advanced laser instruments we can actually see the data climbing this nano-staircase step by step.

"This is a great example of the power of advanced materials science. Traditionally, we would use a series of electronic transistors to move data like this. We've been able to achieve the same effect just by combining different basic elements such as cobalt, platinum and ruthenium. This is the 21st century way of building things harnessing the basic power of elements and materials to give built-in functionality."

Antigua gets OK to become copyright haven

LONDON (AP) ? Americans call it piracy. Antiguans call it justice.

The islands of Antigua and Barbuda are threatening to strip intellectual property protections from American goods as part of a long-running trade dispute over the U.S. embargo on the tiny Caribbean nation's online gambling industry.

U.S. officials say the proposed copyright haven ? whose broad outlines were approved Monday at the World Trade Organization in Geneva ? amounts to "government-authorized piracy." But Antiguans, who've won a series of legal victories against the U.S. at the international trade body, reject any suggestion that they're pirates.

"We have followed the rules and procedures of the WTO to the letter," Antigua's high commissioner to London, Carl Roberts, said in a statement Monday. "Our little country is doing precisely what it has earned the right to do under international agreements."

The U.S. and Antigua have been tussling for years over the ability of Americans to use online casinos based in the Caribbean nation. U.S. laws have long been interpreted to mean that Internet gambling is illegal if it crosses state lines.

The World Trade Organization, however, has come down on Antigua's side. In 2007, it allowed the islands to draw $21 million a year's worth of "nullification or impairments" from the United States as a penalty for the continuing refusal of the U.S. to allow American customers to place their online bets in Antigua.

Antiguan officials say they could make up the money through the operation of a copyright haven, although what that might look like and what its scope would be remains unclear. Antiguan officials have kept details vague and the move has little precedent.

Observers have suggested, for example, a subscription service to access copyright-free American music, or a pay-per-download site that charges pennies for Hollywood hits.

Mark Mendel, a lawyer for Antigua's government, cautioned that whatever ends up being set up, it wouldn't be an Antiguan version of The Pirate Bay, the free-for-all file sharing site whose name has become synonymous with illegal downloads.

"We aren't going to be flaunting the rules," he said in a telephone interview last week. "It's not piracy if you have the right to do it."

The proposed copyright haven may still never see the light of day; Mendel said Antigua's goal remains a negotiated settlement with U.S. authorities over the gambling dispute.

Even if such a haven were set up, international fans of free downloads may want to exercise caution. Antiguans may be allowed to download legally, but for those outside the country the legal regime remains murky.

Nevertheless, the notion of a country of 89,000 people standing up to the powerful United States on intellectual property matters has caught the imagination of many ? especially those who believe that U.S. copyright rules are too restrictive.

"It's time for small countries to be treated fairly in these organizations," said Mendel.

Civil and labor groups: ?Let?s organize for immigration reform?

A coalition of racial, labor, and religious groups announced today they are encouraged by the Senate bipartisan plan on immigration reform, but at the same time made a call for ?action,? announcing a massive rally in Washington on April 10th in support of reform.

?We need to have the same compass, and the compass is a path to citizenship,? said labor leader Hector Figueroa, of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 32BJ, who then said ?a vessel cannot move without the wind driving it ? we want to create that wind,? urging communties to get involved in supporting reform through upcoming ?Day of Actions? and the big rally in April.

Eighteen-year-old Veronica Sarav?a, from the organization CASA de Maryland, is a DREAMER who helped organize the effort in Maryland which led to voter approval of a ?Dream Act? in the state. ?She was at the press conference accompanied by her 10-year-old sister Diana. ??I come from a typical family,? explained Sarav?a, one in which her little sister is a citizen, while she is a Dreamer who has applied for Deferred Action. ?Her mother is an undocumented nanny, her father is on temporary status and her grandmother is a citizen.

?I hope to study psychology and nursing without the fear of being deported, and I want to see my mother retired happily without a struggle,? said Sarav?a.

Another group which came out in support was the nation?s largest and oldest civil rights organization, the NAACP. ? ?Four out of five African-Americans support pushing for comprehensive immigration reform,? said the NAACP?s president, Ben Jealous.??This is an issue that black voters see as a basic humanitarian need; it does not improve for any workers for us to exploit any workers,? said Jealous, adding ? we in the black community understand what it?s like to be mistreated, and we understand the pain of migration.?

Chung-Wha Hong, Executive Director of the New York Immigration Coalition, says her group has been fighting for reform for 20 years, and they have one main concern: ?I?m here to talk about families ? the fear of being separated from their loved ones is the number one concern,? said Hong. ??Why must we see any more children whose parents are taken away in the middle of the night in shackles??

Sister Simone Campbell, Executive Director of NETWORK, said the faith community understands this is not about a special interest group; ?we all know immigrants who are suffering because of our broken system,? said Campbell, who is a Catholic nun. She said she was at a Safeway supermarket when she started talking to the young woman behind her, who said she was a Dreamer and was worried about what was going to happen.

?We the people know this is not working ?- let?s make a change,? Campbell said.

Downton Abbey, Season 3

Jessica Brown-Findlay as Lady Sybil in Series 2 of Downton Abbey. During World War I, Lady Sybil wore the same uniform and did the same work as all the other nurses

Killing off a character is the TV equivalent of serving fugu at a dinner party: It?s exciting at the time, but it?s probably a bad idea in the long run.

Lady Sybil Crawley was not only Downton Abbey?s kindest, most open-minded character. On a show that purports to chronicle the social forces transforming a Yorkshire village in the early 20th century, she was also the only person who did more than just talk about change. During World War I, she ignored her family?s objections and worked as a nurse?toiling the same hours and providing the same care as everyone else who wore the uniform. (Her sister Edith made herself popular with recuperating officers by writing letters and picking out books for them to read, but her contribution to the war effort was more ornamental than Sybil?s hard graft.)

Before the war, Sybil had attended political rallies, and after it she didn?t just shout slogans (or write letters to the editor); she renounced her own privilege and married a man who had once been a servant in her family home?a Catholic and an Irish nationalist to boot. They sailed off to Dublin, where they lived as Mr. and Mrs. Tom and Sybil Branson, with no domestic help and very little income. She was the least compromised, most principled person in the Crawleys? orbit?and ultimately that killed her.

Because while Sybil could make a modern marriage with Tom?one in which they loved, respected, and listened to one another?she couldn?t make her father overcome his own habits of privilege. That led Lord Grantham to ignore Tom?s pleas and Dr. Clarkson?s advice that they move Sybil to the hospital. Lord Grantham?s allegiance is to socially elevated men like Sir Philip Tapsell?chaps who socialize with earls and dukes and who dress for dinner without a quarrel?rather than to the village doctor or the former chauffeur. In the end, it all came down to money: ?Tom has not hired Sir Philip,? Lord Grantham told his family. ?He is not master here.?

And so the master sided with Sir Philip, who didn?t hesitate to make an impossible promise to the assembled crew, while Dr. Clarkson was honest enough to admit that he couldn?t guarantee a safe delivery for Sybil, even if they decamped to the hospital. (Perhaps he would have done so if his record as a diagnostician weren?t already hopelessly tainted by his declaration last season that Matthew would forever be incapable of movement below the waist.) Sadly, as we all now know, Sir Philip may be the aristocracy?s favorite ob-gyn, but he?s a terrible doctor, far too sure of himself and his status to listen to the warnings of a village physician, much less to pay attention to the symptoms of a mere patient.

Sybil?s death has stirred up the plot, driving a wedge between Cora and Robert, and opening up lots of questions about how and where Sybil and Tom?s daughter will be raised. But it?s also a depressing defeat for the possibility of social progress. Sybil died a painful death at age 24, after her father the earl overruled her commoner husband and sided with a doctor with a knighthood. On Downton Abbey, tradition always triumphs, but this loss is particularly painful.

'Argo,' Lawrence, Day-Lewis win at SAG

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? The CIA thriller "Argo" continues to steamroll through awards season, winning the top honor for overall cast performance at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

SAG's lead-acting honors Sunday went to Jennifer Lawrence for her role as a troubled widow in a shaky new relationship in the lost-souls romance "Silver Linings Playbook" and Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln in the Civil War epic "Lincoln."

Anne Hathaway of "Les Miserables" and Tommy Lee Jones of "Lincoln" won the supporting-acting honors.

"It occurred to me ? it was an actor that murdered Abraham Lincoln," said Day-Lewis, a solid front-runner to join an exclusive list of three-time acting Oscar winners. "And therefore, somehow it is only so fitting that every now and then an actor tries to bring him back to life again."

It was a brisk, businesslike and fairly bland evening as the actors union handed out honors to a predictable lineup of winners who generally had triumphed at earlier Hollywood ceremonies or past SAG shows.

The SAG cast win came a day after "Argo" claimed the top honor from the Producers Guild of America, whose winner often goes on to claim best picture at the Academy Awards. "Argo" also was a surprise victor two weeks ago at the Golden Globes, where it won best drama and director for Ben Affleck.

The awards momentum positions "Argo" for a rare feat at the Feb. 24 Oscars, where it could become just the fourth film in 85 years to be named best picture without a nomination for its director.

"To me this has nothing to do with me, it has to do with the incredible people who were in this movie," said Affleck, who also stars in "Argo" and accepted the SAG prize alongside his cast.

Affleck plays CIA agent Tony Mendez, who masterminded the daring rescue of six U.S. embassy workers in Iran after the 1979 hostage crisis erupted. The Americans were brought out of Iran masquerading as crew members of a fake Hollywood sci-fi movie scouting locations.

A directing nomination at the Oscars usually goes hand in hand with a best-picture win. When Affleck was snubbed for a directing slot, awards analysts initially were counting "Argo" out for the best-picture Oscar, along with Kathryn Bigelow's "Zero Dark Thirty" and Tom Hooper's "Les Miserables," which also missed out on directing nominations.

Only once in modern times has a film won best picture without a directing nomination, with 1989's "Driving Miss Daisy." The other two times came in the show's early years, at the first Oscars in 1929 with "Wings" and for 1932's "Grand Hotel."

But "Argo" has proven a resilient crowd-pleaser, dominating at awards shows since then over Steven Spielberg's "Lincoln," which leads the Oscars with 12 nominations.

The cast prize at SAG adds some weight to the Oscar prospects for "Argo," though the guild honor has a spotty record at forecasting eventual best-picture winners. Only eight of 17 times since the guild added the category has the cast winner gone on to take the best-picture Oscar. "The Help" won the guild's cast prize last year, while Oscar voters named "The Artist" as best picture.

The next playoff round before the Oscars is Saturday's Directors Guild of America Awards, where Affleck, Bigelow, Spielberg and Hooper all are nominated, along with Ang Lee for "Life of Pi." The winner there typically goes on to triumph with directing and best-picture Oscars, but only Spielberg and Lee are nominated for both the Directors Guild and Oscar prizes this time, throwing the awards picture into a muddle.

Sunday's acting prizes solidify those categories, though. "Silver Linings" star Lawrence won a Golden Globe and has become one of Hollywood's hottest talents, with part two of her blockbuster franchise, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," due out in November.

"Now I have this naked statue that means some of you even voted for me, and that is an indescribable feeling," Lawrence said after explaining she earned her SAG card at age 14 by filming a spot for MTV.

Hathaway won for her role as a doomed single mother forced into prostitution in the adaptation of the stage musical based on Victor Hugo's epic novel. Her win came over four past Oscar recipients ? Sally Field, Helen Hunt, Nicole Kidman and Maggie Smith.

"I'm just thrilled I have dental," Hathaway said. "I got my SAG card when I was 14. It felt like the beginning of the world. I have loved every single minute of my life as an actor. ... Thank you for nominating me alongside incredible women and incredible performances."

Jones, who was not at the show, won for his turn as abolitionist firebrand Thaddeus Stevens in the Civil War epic. The win improves his odds to become a two-time Academy Award winner. He previously won a supporting-actor Oscar for "The Fugitive."

Day-Lewis, a two-time Oscar winner for "My Left Foot" and "There Will Be Blood," could become the fifth actor to earn three Oscars, along with Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Ingrid Bergman and Walter Brennan. Katharine Hepburn has the acting record with four Oscars.

Backstage at SAG, Day-Lewis was hardly ready to predict a third Oscar win.

"There's a good chance I won't. I feel the same way at all these occasions. Mostly, we're traveling as a group, the fellow nominees, give or take one here or there," Day-Lewis said. "I would happily recognize any single one person whose name is called."

On SAG's television side, with "30 Rock" ending its run, its stars Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin won the SAG awards for best comedy performers. It was Baldwin's seventh-straight win, while Fey earned her fifth SAG prize.

"Oh, my God. It's ridiculous," Baldwin said. "It's the end of our show, which is sad. Everybody is sad about that. It was the greatest experience I've ever had."

Fey gave a plug for the show's finale airing Thursday, noting that it's up against "The Big Bang Theory."

"Just tape 'The Big Bang Theory' for once, for crying out loud," Fey said.

"Modern Family" won for best overall cast in a TV comedy show. Accepting for the cast, "Modern Family" co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson offered thanks to the makers of "30 Rock" and another departing series, "The Office," saying "you all have set the comedy bar so high."

The TV drama acting awards went to Claire Danes of "Homeland" and Bryan Cranston of "Breaking Bad." ''Downton Abbey" won the TV drama cast award.

Julianne Moore's turn as Sarah Palin in "Game Change" earned her the TV prize for best actress in a movie or miniseries. Kevin Costner won for best actor in a movie or miniseries for "Hatfields & McCoys."

Receiving the guild's life-achievement award was Dick Van Dyke, who presented the same prize last year to his "The Dick Van Dyke Show" co-star, Mary Tyler Moore.

After waiting on stage for a prolonged standing ovation to end, Van Dyke said, "That does an old man a lot of good."
