Who needs to file a DBA?

There are two circumstances when your business needs to file a DBA registration:

1: If you are a sole proprietor or general partnership conducting business using a name that?s different from your own name. For example, if Jane Doe wants to open a bookstore called Books for Cooks, she would need to file a DBA. In some places, you?re able to use your name plus a description of your product/service without filing a DBA. For example, if Jane Doe wanted to open a bookstore called Jane Doe?s Cookbooks, she may not have to file a DBA. If your business name implies a group (i.e. The Doe Group) or you just use your first name (i.e. Jane?s Cookbooks), you?ll have to file a DBA.

2: If you have incorporated or formed a limited liability company (LLC) and are operating the business under a name that is different from the name of the company or LLC. For example, let?s say that Jane Doe Cookbooks, LLC also wants to operate under the name JanesCookbooks.com, the LLC would need to file for a DBA for JanesCookbooks.com. Likewise, if Jane Doe wanted to expand into cooking supplies, then Jane Doe Cookbooks, LLC would need to file a DBA to do business as Jane Doe Cooking Supplies.

The benefits of a DBA

The main benefit of filing a DBA registration is it will keep you in compliance with the law. For sole proprietors, a DBA lets them use a typical business name without creating a formal legal entity (i.e. corporation or LLC). This is typically the least expensive way to legally conduct business under a different business name.

Filing a DBA gives the sole proprietor the freedom to use a business name what helps market their products or services, as well as create a separate professional business identity. However, be advised that a DBA doesn?t protect your business name from being used by others. For that, you will need to seek trademark protection.

The Small Business Administration (SBA) offers a chart outlining the different requirements for fictitious name filings state by state. Some states also require that you publish a notice in your local newspaper and then submit proof that you have fulfilled the publication requirement. Of course, specific publication requirements vary. International Women's Day: Butterflies and Galaxies

Today is International Women?s Day. To celebrate, here?s a post showcasing just a couple of the many really amazing discoveries made by women in astronomy.

Annie Maunder was born in Ireland in 1868. She won a scholarship to go to Cambridge, where she studied mathematics. She was top in her year, but did not receive a BA ? they were only awarded to men at the time.

After her degree she began work as a ?computer? at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. This was low paid, menial work. Luckily for Annie, she became assistant to Edward Walter Maunder, who was in charge to the Photographic and Spectroscopic Department at the Observatory. They collaborated in tracking sunspots ? dark spots on the sun created by intense magnetic activity ? and eventually married.

Annie resigned her post at the Observatory but carried on working with her husband. Together, they showed that there was a connection between the number of sunspots on the sun and the Earth?s climate. The Maunder minimum, an extended period of time during which there was an unusually low number of sunspots, is named after the two of them.

Above is modern version of the butterfly diagram published by Edward Maunder and based on work done with his wife, Annie. The diagram shows that sunspot location varies over the sun?s 11 year cycle. And it looks a bit like a line of butterflies ? hence the name.

Caroline Herschel was the first woman to discover a comet ? and went on to find eight in total. Though she is best known for her comets, she also discovered several deep-sky objects, including the Sculptor Galaxy.

Caroline was born in 1750 in Hanover, Germany. From the age of 22 she lived with her brother, William, in England. After discovering Uranus, William became an astronomer to the Royal Family, and Caroline his assistant. King George III granted Caroline a ?50 salary for her work, making her the first woman to earn a living from astronomy.

Caroline discovered the Sculptor Galaxy, or NGC 253, in 1783. It lies about 13 million light years from Earth and is undergoing a huge burst of star formation. It?s a dusty galaxy ? only when looking at it in infrared can we see the true extent of the intense star formation within. This image, taken by the European Southern Observatory?s VISTA telescope reveals the galaxy?s spiral arms and bright core.

Caroline also independently discovered Messier 110, a satellite of the Andromeda Galaxy.

Today, of course, there are many more women working in astronomy. The barriers to entry are not the same as they were in Caroline Herschel?s or Annie Maunder?s days. But we?ve still got a long way to go before there are equal numbers of men and women working in science, engineering and technology. (According to the UKRC, for example, women make up only 15.5% of SET professionals in the UK.)

Twisty dust devil captured on Mars

A Martian mini-tornado caught on camera by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter brings new meaning to the word "twister."

This isn't the first dust devil to show up on Martian imagery. The whirlwinds have been photographed by NASA probes for more than 30 years, and in some places, the Red Planet's landscape is heavily crisscrossed by dust devil tracks. In 2005, the Spirit rover's time-lapse view of multiple dust devils was made into a movie. But this picture, taken on Feb. 16 as the orbiter passed over the Amazonia Planitia region of northern Mars, has to rank among the most artistic of the dust devil delights.

Scientists estimate that the dust devil rose to a height of more than half a mile (800 meters), with a plume that's about 30 yards (meters) in diameter. A westerly breeze adds a delicate arc to the plume, and the afternoon sun creates a curving, stretched-out shadow.

Dust devils on Mars, like their cousins on Earth, are spinning columns of air that are made visible by the dust they stir up. They typically arise on a clear day when the ground is heated by the sun. As the atmospheric layer near the surface warms, air rises through a pocket in the cooler layer above it, taking on a spin when the conditions are just right.

Martian air is much thinner than our earthly atmosphere, and composed almost entirely of carbon dioxide. But the Red Planet's winds can still pack a huge punch. Over the years, NASA's rovers have benefited from wind-driven "cleaning events" that sweep the dust off their power-generating solar panels. Last month, the Opportunity rover underwent a slight cleaning that put it in a better position to endure the Martian winter ? which just goes to show that a devil can be an angel on the Red Planet.

Winless Ron Paul's quixotic White House quest

Longshot Republican presidential contender Ron Paul has failed to win any of some 20 states which have picked their 2012 election standard-bearer, but vows to keep up his quixotic quest for the White House.

The Texas lawmaker seemed to acknowledge that his unorthodox bid for the White House has been a bit like tilting at windmills, but vows to press on all the same.

"Do I believe I can win? Yes. Do I believe the chances are slim? Yes, I do," he told US television broadcaster CBS over the weekend.

The 76-year-old obstetrician's presidential campaign has a loyal and impassioned following which has focused on his stout defense of constitutional principles and individual liberties.

But Paul has said that vying to become the Republican nominee to challenge President Barack Obama is not the only point of his campaign.

After pocketing what he hopes will be a healthy number of delegates, Paul expects to be a key player when the Republican party holds its nominating convention in August.

"I don't care about power, but I care about influence, and the best way you can influence a nation and move a nation is by translating this into political action that is successful," he told US television last weekend.

"If you're in a race to make a point or to promote a cause, the best way to do that is to win," he said to US television last weekend.

Pundits said that thinking is precisely why it is highly unlikely that the somewhat quirky Texas lawmaker will pull out of the race -- despite a winless streak that would have led a different candidate to pull out long ago.

"Ron Paul marches to the beat of his own drummer," longtime Washington pundit Thomas Mann told AFP.

"He doesn't need victories to continue his campaign. He has a band of committed libertarians who will keep his campaign going as long as he chooses," said Mann, an analyst with the Brookings Institution think tank.

As a libertarian -- one of his three White House campaigns was even as the Libertarian Party standard bearer -- Paul says he is committed to reducing the intrusion of government in the daily lives of Americans.

Paul is an obstetrician by training who for two decades has put his practice on hold so that he could represent Texas in the US Congress.

Slightly built, professorial in style, the septuagenarian doesn't exactly look the part of presidential contender, and is given little real chance of winning his party's presidential nod.

By and large, he has ignored the talking points of the other three contenders, who have focused on social issues like religious faith, contraception and immigration.

Instead, Paul has focused largely on the yawning US debt and how in his view big, intrusive government helped create it.

His unlikely policy agenda also includes a return to the gold standard, ending US military interventions around the world, decriminalizing marijuana and cutting $1 trillion from the federal budget in his first year in the White House.

If Paul fails to claim the grand prize of the presidential nomination later this year, he may still have picked up enough delegates to claim a prime convention speech slot or pet plank in the party's presidential platform.

"He's not done. He has a plan and he's sticking to it," William Galston, another political expert at Brookings, told AFP.

"Paul's not running a campaign so much has he is leading a movement," Galston said.

Observers with a conspiratorial bent have suggested that Paul's real aim is to leverage his influence to snag a cabinet seat in a future Mitt Romney administration for his son Rand Paul, a freshman US senator.

Better yet, they say, he is hoping that the Republican frontrunner will offer his son a place on the 2012 ticket as his running mate. Father and son both have rejected the speculation.

Ron Paul received some negative publicity earlier in the campaign after being forced to distance himself from racist statements published under his name 20 years ago, but that controversy blew over and does not appear to have cut into his support.

He is also is a chief critic of President Barack Obama's hallmark health reform program, especially its provision that would require some Americans to buy health insurance or pay a fine -- an issue likely to figure prominently in the general election
