Eddie Alvarez, Shogun/Vera, UFC Light-Heavyweight Title Shot: Morning News Roundup ? 7.31.12

The Rexplex Sports Complex in Elizabeth, N.J., in December of 2003.? Ah yes, I remember it well.? The ring was set up next to a skate ramp, with a big curtain seperating us MMA folks from the kids doing tricks?on their skateboards.? As for the fights, some lanky dude named Luke Cummo put his?jiu-jitsu skills to good use and won his bout via submission, while another up-and-comer named Jay Hieron completely steamrolled over his foe.? We paid attention to those bouts a bit more because Cummo and Hieron were somewhat established in the area, and though people cheered when?Eddie Alvarez scored a dominant KO in his MMA debut, no one knew who Alvarez was?or what he'd eventually accomplish in the sport.? Why did I take this stroll down memory lane?? Because Alvarez is leading off your morning news roundup.

  • Former Bellator lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez has one fight left on his contract, and it looks like it's going to be used for a match-up against fearsome Brazilian?monster Patricky "Pitbull" Freire.? When it comes to fighter contracts and the willingness of promotions to re-sign their stars, there are a lot of moving parts that must taken into consideration - things like actual cost, anticipated revenue and just what the parties can do to further each other's interests.? As one of Bellator's first "big" signings, Alvarez brought a ton of credibility to the organization, and Bjorn Rebney definitely made it worthwhile for the Philadelphia native in terms of cheddar.? But nothing lasts forever, so here we are with a high-ranking lightweight very likely about to enter free agency.? What do you do with him if you're Bellator?? Give him a tough, sure-fire exciting match-up that will make your October 12 show a memorable one of course.? And if you're Alvarez, you're going to want to win in the most impressive way possible to make sure your value when you enter free agency is at its highest.? Well, you know who wins in all this?? Us fans, because, Alvarez vs. Freire... yikes!? That's all kinds of "wow"!

?

  • Yesterday UFC president Dana White said Saturday's UFC on FOX 4 main event between Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Brandon Vera would determine the number one contender for UFC light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones' belt.? Reactions were mixed (to put it lightly).? Now White is backtracking a little bit and saying that if either of the occupants of Saturday's co-main event - a tilt between Lyoto Machida and Ryan Bader - look impressive enough in victory, they could get the title shot instead.? This certainly makes more sense.? At least, only insomuch as Jones has pretty much slaughtered everyone that he's faced (including Shogun, Vera, Machida and Bader in prior match-ups), and why not offer up the title shot to whoever looks good?? At this rate, Jones is going to be the first UFC champ to get to fight two challengers in the cage at once.? (He'd probably win that fight, too.)

?

  • Former UFC welterweight contender Jon Fitch will be facing rising star Erick Silva at UFC 153 in Brazil.? You have to imagine that at this point, after having had a run at the title but failing to move the needle in terms of exciting the fans, Fitch is on that spreadsheet that the UFC keeps that's titled "Fighters To Get Rid Of".? Dude has to do something to get off that list...

?

That's all for now.

Headaches and migraines are very common amongst people. They cause discomfort and lack of focus for you when you work. Tips to prevent headaches and migraines: ??????????????

  • Feverfew and ginger- A combined mixture of feverfew and ginger has been used as an anti-nausea treatment from a long time and it is available in the form of a tablet- Lipigesic. You can gain magnesium from nuts, dark green vegetables and seeds.

?

  • Vitamin B2- Studies showed that having sufficient amount of vitamin B2 in body helps in reducing the frequency of migraines. It is believed that migraines are caused by the lack of energy in nerve cells, magnesium and vitamin B2 helps in boosting the energy production inside the nerve cell.

?

  • Vitamin D- As people spend most of the time remaining indoors, it is believed that lack of vitamin D can be a reason of headaches and migraines. Though it is yet not proven, but still your body need vitamin D, so it is better if you spend a bit more time in sun.

Markets stay supported by ECB hopes

(AP) ? Hopes that Europe is readying some firm action to deal with its debt crisis continued to support sentiment in the markets Monday at the start of a week that could also see the Federal Reserve also enact further measures to boost the U.S. economy.

Stocks, as well as the euro and the bond prices of Spain and Italy, have been buoyant since last Thursday's comments from European Central Bank president Mario Draghi that the bank "is ready to do what it takes to preserve the euro. Believe me, it will be enough."

Those comments raised expectations that, at the very least, the ECB will ramp up its bond-buying program in the hope of keeping a lid on Spanish and Italian borrowing rates. The recent sharp rise in Spain's interest rates raised concerns that the 17-country eurozone hasn't the capacity to bail out its fourth-largest economy, and raised the specter of Italy needing financial help too.

In Europe, Germany's DAX rose 0.6 percent to 6,730 while the CAC-40 in France was 0.5 percent higher at 3,295. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.4 percent at 5,648.

The euro however gave up some of its recent gains, trading 0.4 percent lower at $1.2258.

Making sure that Spain and Italy can continue tapping financial markets for cash appears to be the priority of policymakers despite a warning from Germany's central bank, the Bundesbank, that the line between monetary and fiscal policy should not be blurred.

Both Spain and Italy have seen the pressure on their bonds ease since Draghi's comments. The yield on Spain's 10-year bonds in the markets has dropped significantly below the dangerous 7 percent level to around 6.60 percent, while Italy was able to raise around a bigger than expected ?5.5 billion ($6.77 billion) in a round of auctions Monday. Crucially, the yield on the 10-year bond fell to 5.96 percent from 6.19 percent the last time it was offered, a signal of improving investor appetite.

"The pressure will be on for the ECB to actually deliver," said Geoffrey Yu, an analyst at UBS.

For now, investors continue to think that something will be delivered.

Wall Street was also poised for a modest retrenchment at the open later ? both Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures were 0.3 percent lower.

Most of the attention Monday will center on Europe, with U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner due to meet Draghi and Germany's finance minister to discuss the challenges facing Europe and the global economy.

The spotlight this week won't just be on Europe: Fed policymakers are also meeting this week and there are growing expectations that in light of waning economic growth, they may announce a new monetary stimulus. The Bank of England also holds its monthly rate-setting meeting.

"With the ECB meeting this week, and the Fed and Bank of England also having their regular get-togethers, there is plenty of scope for central bank-inspired excitement," said Chris Beauchamp, market analyst at IG Index.

Earlier in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 stock average closed up 0.8 percent at 8,635.44 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng jumped 1.6 percent to 19,585.40. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 climbed 0.9 percent to 4,245.70 and South Korea's Kospi rose 0.8 percent to 1,843.79. China's Shanghai Composite fell 0.9 percent to 2,109.91.

In energy trading, benchmark crude for September delivery was down 10 cents at $90.03 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Review: Chiba | Restaurant Review | Gambit New Orleans News ...

Menus at local Japanese restaurants tend to run long but often are short on originality. People who frequent sushi bars usually can order their favorite rolls by rote.

??Visit Chiba, however, and you'll want to give that menu a closer look. Chiba is new, thoroughly contemporary and very stylish. In its own way, however, the food manages to make Japanese cuisine seem exotic and revelatory again.

??Here, a recent special featured glistening salmon slices, twisted into shapes like chess pieces, each wrapped around a fat, tart blackberry with pearly red bits of tobiko. Fruit is used like sweet fish in some rolls, like the satsuma-strawberry roll, a showstopper. And while I'd rarely recommend steak at a Japanese restaurant. A New York strip here is a welcome exception. It is sliced as thin as sashimi and proved nearly as tender ? its scarlet depths streaked with a mirin marinade with the warm spices of tasso underneath it.

??First-time restaurateur Keith Dusko opened Chiba in March. Dusko logged many years in New York City's Japanese restaurant scene and has brought that experience to bear here. Chiba stands out from local Japanese restaurants in many ways, and price is one of them. You'll end up paying here what you'd expect at a nice bistro. A happy hour (daily from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and reprised an hour before closing each night) has good deals on a few rolls, hot bar snacks and drinks.

??Chiba's overall approach avoids predictability, and it's refreshing but not without pitfalls. A yellowtail ceviche special with blueberries and shredded sweet potato required better chopstick skills than we could manage. I was excited to see how the Chiba grand platter might reinterpret a chilled fruits de mer platter, but it resulted in some of the dullest eating in the house, with disagreeably bitter clams and squid salad minced to the point of mush. Soy-soaked oyster shooters were the only part of the elaborate presentation I'd repeat.

??These were exceptions, however. In addition to its creative successes Chiba keeps an exceptionally well-stocked sushi bar. The tuna, for instance, starts off with beautiful maguro the color of red wine and ranges up a few rungs to otoro, the fattiest ? and most expensive ? cut, which arrives the color of rose. Chiba also makes a specialty of live shellfish, which are done in by the sushi knife just after you order it. A good raw scallop should be full of sweet, marine flavor; Chiba's live scallop has that but also a floral silkiness. The acidic bounce from a lemon garnish practically made the scallop flesh jump, and chased with some cool, melon-scented sake, it was an unforgettable taste.

??Now that New Orleanians can get a sushi lunch at a grocery store and have sashimi delivered like pizza, it's nice to find a restaurant like Chiba that shakes things up again.

Olympic viewing: NBC critics loud on social media

NEW YORK (AP) ? In the age of social media, NBC now has millions of television critics who make their opinions known about every aspect of Olympics coverage instantly.

They've even set up their own hashtag on Twitter: (hash)nbcfail. The online complaints focused Saturday on NBC's decision to air the marquee swimming event won by American Ryan Lochte on tape delay in prime time, and Friday on the network not streaming the opening ceremony online. Sunday's critics started early: people wondering why the U.S. men's basketball team's opening game aired on a cable network while women's cycling was shown on NBC.

The conversation is so active that NBC's executive producer of the games, Jim Bell, took to Twitter to answer critics and even change the way NBC is doing something in response.

"(hash)nbcfail is filled with a lot of crying and snark and humor, but NBC can actually learn something from it," said Jeff Jarvis, a media critic who writes the Buzzmachine.com blog.

Complaints about tape delayed coverage are an evergreen with Olympics held on foreign soil. But the London Games are the first with Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites in full flower, in a mobile phone era where people carry computers that instantly deliver news in their pockets. It has amplified the impatience of viewers who want to see events on their large-screen TVs instantly and haven't been mollified by NBC's decision to stream the events live online.

James Poniewozik, Time magazine TV critic, tweeted that "NBC tape delay coverage is like the airlines: its interest is in giving you the least satisfactory service you will still come back for."

That drew a quick response from NBC's Bell: "You do know that all sports events are being streamed live right?"

"I do, indeed!" replied Poniewozik. "Have enjoyed it. Apparently a lot of folks still prefer watching it on TV."

NBC says it saves big events for prime-time airing because that is when most viewers are available to watch them and where the network makes the bulk of its advertising revenue. Since prime time on the U.S. East Coast coincides with 1 a.m. London time, there are no events to air live then. NBC representatives noted that there were 39 hours of live events Sunday on NBC and its affiliated networks.

Even as it defends its approach, NBC clearly hears those critics. One of Bell's Facebook posts highlighted coverage of Sunday's cycling race by saying it was all-caps LIVE. The network advertised its live streaming on the prime-time broadcast.

Jonathan Wald, who produces Piers Morgan's CNN talk show and used to work at NBC, tweeted that "the medal for most Olympic whining goes to everyone who complains about what happens every four years. Tape delay."

One of those complainers, in fact, was Morgan: He tweeted his disdain Friday for NBC's decision not to make the opening ceremony available live.

The advent of Twitter makes it seems as if there's a lot of unhappiness when the majority of viewers are watching NBC on tape delay and appear satisfied with it, Wald said in an interview.

NBC can point to television ratings justifying their approach. The Nielsen company said the opening ceremony drew more than 40 million people Friday, the most ever for one of those Olympic events. Saturday's first night of coverage was seen by 28.7 million, another record, beating every other first night of Olympic competition. In Beijing four years ago, 24 million watched on the corresponding night.

Jarvis said he believes NBC could satisfy fans by, for example, televising events like Lochte's race live in the afternoon and then repeating it at night. He acknowledges, though, that he's not the one who'd potentially be risking millions of dollars in advertising revenue if such a decision cut into prime-time viewing.

NBC has tried to "hold on to old media strategies in a new media world," Jarvis said. "And that's a mistake."

Some of the online complaints seem to take special glee in bashing NBC, with a few describing it like an Olympic sport of its own. Some are quite personal, like the CNN producer who tweeted Sunday: "No USA basketball in my hotel room. Why they aren't putting it on NBC's main channel is beyond me!"

Bell, in some of his back-and-forth with online critics Sunday, answered one tweeter who described herself as a St. Louis mom and complained about NBC's "Nightly News" on Saturday airing results of events that hadn't been shown on the network yet. Bell tweeted that he'd look into it, and shortly after told her that "Nightly News" would announce a "spoiler alert" to tell people to avert their eyes if they didn't want to see results.

Not everyone online is a critic. On Sunday, the U.S. Olympic sailing team tweeted that it was "by far the greatest sailing TV coverage in Olympic history."

ROWDY vs. PHELPS: Does Michael Phelps need bulletin board material anymore? If so, Rowdy Gaines provided it with his sharp criticism of Phelp's first final this weekend. "He just didn't train for it ... You can't fake that event," Gaines said.

UP CLOSE: Understand NBC's need to help us get to know obscure athletes in obscure sports. But the news about two synchronized divers who both collect rubber ducks felt like self-parody.

UPCOMING: Ryan Lochte's bid for a second gold medal is featured on NBC's Monday night coverage.

Video Marketing Tips?Jumping Into The Online Video Bandwagon ...

Video marketing is taking over the online business industry. Most entrepreneurs are realizing the value of this tool and have started investing in it for promotional purposes. The fifty million video viewers several years ago have now grown into hundreds of millions. Hence, not joining the trend has become quite impossible. In this article, let?s talk about some video marketing tips on how to jump into the bandwagon gracefully.

First things first, you must know that videos for internet marketing are very different from other SEO videos used in TV ads or big screen ads. They are a lot crisper and direct. While some of them can last as long as five minutes, this is already too long in the eyes of the online viewers. Since internet people are always in a hurry, they don?t typically have patience longer than an inch. If you are prudent, you must ensure that your ad is only as long as several seconds. Of course, you can make it longer in other occasion, but that would highly depend on the message you wish to get across.

Another thing you should know about video internet marketing is it has to be posted only on a site that has valuable content. You know, one that the public returns to again and again. Even if your business is small but you?ve already established a good reputation in the public?s eyes, your video can be as valuable as anything done by a much bigger company. This is because good reputation always delivers good results which also strengthens your online presence and authority.

Third on this list of video marketing tips is the vitality of uniqueness. While a lot of entrepreneurs have started creating their own video ads, this doesn?t mean that you will just do as they do. You have to come up with ideas that will break away from the norm. Your goal must always be to make your video stand out; to facilitate strong recall among the audience so that they will take action right after watching what you made for them. You cannot attain this end unless you beg to differ from all the rest.

These are the video marketing tips you must keep handy at all times to ensure that the investment you make will be well worth it. Remember, video production can be quite demanding even if it?s just a 15-second clip we?re talking about. Make sure that you are equipped with the right goals so you can be properly guided. When you know what you want, getting it can be a lot easier?if not even pleasurable. Won?t you like to taste the sweetness of success through that?

Israel to increase tax as austerity bites | Al Akhbar English

Israel's government will raise income taxes as part of a series of austerity steps aimed at keeping the budget under control.

Despite increasing anger from the public, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz have decided to increase income taxes by 1 percent on those earning more than the average salary of 8,881 shekels a month ($2,193) in 2013.

Value added taxes (VAT) were also set to rise to 17 percent from 16 percent on August 1, most ministries' budgets will be trimmed by 5 percent, and the tax authority is targeting tax evaders to collect billions of shekels. Last week, Steinitz ordered immediate tax hikes on cigarettes and beer.

Headlines in Israeli newspapers on Sunday called the steps an attack on the middle class, although Netanyahu and Steinitz said that without such measures, Israel's economy could collapse and suffer the same fate as southern Europe.

Bank of Israel Governor Stanley Fischer said on Sunday he supported the proposals to rein in the budget deficit, which has widened due to a tax shortfall stemming from weaker than expected economic growth.

"The actions of the prime minister and finance minister are brave and essential to improve our budget situation in 2013," Fischer, who had lobbied for tax hikes, said in a statement.

The finance ministry said the measures will add 14.4 billion shekels to state coffers next year.

Israel's economy is forecast to grow some 2.5 percent this year after 4.8 percent in 2011.

Two Israelis have set fire to themselves in recent weeks in protest at the right-wing government's policies.

Spencer Green)

(AP) ? Struggling to contain his anger, a Chicago judge on Tuesday sentenced Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson's former brother-in-law to life in prison for killing her mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew in what prosecutors say was a fit of jealous rage.

In blistering comments, Cook County Circuit Judge Charles Burns rejected William Balfour's claims that he was innocent of the crimes.

"You have the heart of an arctic night," Burns told Balfour. "Your soul is as barren as dark space."

Balfour was convicted in May of first-degree murder in the 2008 shooting deaths of Hudson's 57-year-old mother, Darnell Donerson; her 29-year-old brother, Jason Hudson; and her 7-year-old nephew, Julian King.

During the trial, prosecutors portrayed Balfour, who was married to Hudson's sister, Julia Hudson, as a jealous estranged husband who often stalked the Hudson family home after he moved out in early 2008. Balfour's attorneys suggested someone else committed a crime in the family's three-story house in the Englewood neighborhood on Chicago's South Side.

Burns' harshest comments Tuesday came in regards to Julian's death. The judge's voice cracked as he recounted how terrified the child must have been in the second before he was shot twice in the head.

"I have no doubt in my mind he looked to you when you put bullets in his head," the judge said.

Hudson, who attended every day of Balfour's trial earlier this year, sat next to her sister and dabbed her eyes with a tissue a couple of times during the hearing, including the 10 minutes in which Burns put his own anger into words. She did not make a statement to the judge and left the courtroom without commenting.

Balfour offered his condolences to the Hudson family while maintaining that he didn't kill their relatives.

"My deepest prayers goes out to Julian King. I loved him. I still love him," he said. "I'm innocent, your honor."

Burns, however, said he had no doubt "whatsoever" that Balfour committed the crimes, including the shooting of a little boy "just because he was there."

"I don't think you have one ounce of remorse in your soul; I really don't," Burns said.

Illinois does not have the death penalty, and Balfour faced a mandatory life sentence. The judge sentenced Balfour to three terms of life in prison plus 120 years on other charges, a largely symbolic move but one that underlined the judge's feelings.

The killings occurred the morning after Julia Hudson's birthday, and prosecutors said he became enraged when he stopped by the home and saw a gift of balloons in the house from her new boyfriend.

After his estranged wife left for work on the morning of Oct. 24, 2008, prosecutors said Balfour went back inside the home with a .45-caliber handgun and shot Hudson's mother. He then allegedly shot Hudson's brother twice in the head as he lay in bed.

Prosecutors said Balfour then drove off in Jason Hudson's SUV with Julian, Julia's son, and shot the boy several times in the head as he lay behind a front seat. His body was found in the abandoned vehicle miles away after a three-day search.

"Three days under a tarp," Burns said of the time the boy's body lay in the backseat of the SUV. "Just as if you threw out the trash and left it to rot."

Although the sentence means Balfour will likely die in prison, the judge made a point of telling Balfour the sentences would run one after another, followed by an additional 120 years for his other convictions, including home invasion, aggravated kidnapping and possession of a stolen vehicle.

The only family member to speak was Julian's father, Gregory King, who told of the three days of hoping that his son might be alive only to find out he was dead. He also spoke about what had been taken from him by his son's death, of the everyday moments that make up a relationship between a father and a son.

"I miss picking Julian up from the school bus," King said. "I miss going on field trips with him. ... I even miss his bugging me about Sponge Bob Square Pants, a cartoon character he was kind of afraid of."

Jennifer Hudson chose not to make a statement. During the trial, the Academy Award-winning actress for her role in the 2007 film "Dreamgirls" testified that she had known Balfour since the eighth grade and always disliked him.

INDIA: Trades Union Congress slams Maruti Suzuki rioters as "mob"

Author: Simon Warburton | 23 July 2012

India's Trades Union Congress (AITUC) has added its voice to the chorus of condemnation surrounding last week's Maruti Suzuki Manesar riot in which one one senior management member was killed.

As well as the fatality, around 90 employees were injured as a fire broke out causing substantial damage to the north India plant, whose management has now imposed a lock-out of the 3,000 or so staff.

The AITUC - representing 3.6m workers in?India - is distancing itself however, from what happened, claiming those acting were not affiliated to an official trade union and condemning the actions as those of a mob.

"There is a a lot of tension - whatever the workers have done is not good - they have acted like a mob," AITUC general secretary, Darshan Sachdev, told just-auto from Delhi. "We have already condemned the violence because we feel by violent means, you can't resolve your demands.

"I consider it a sad day for the trade union movement of India where the workers have behaved in such a way. About 100 workers have been arrested and police are looking for another 40-50, who have gone underground."

Reports indicated a newly-formed Maruti Suzuki Workers' Union was in the Manesar plant, but it is unclear what role they played and although senior management appear to suggest they started the fire that led to such fatal consequences, there is no firm evidence of that yet.

Manesar has been plagued by enormous industrial unrest in recent times, but this escalation has taken the stand-off between staff and management to new heights of tension, even perhaps to not discussing the issue with legitimate bodies such as the AITUC.

"Management of course, does not want to talk to any outsiders," said Sachdev. "They consider us as outsiders as union people."

A further consequence of the riot has seen all 3,000 Manesar workers stay at home as a result of the lock-out with no pay. "There is no question of payment to the workers," said Sachdev, adding: "The contract workers are the most suffering.

"Naturally, no worker is paid. That all depends on whether the government refers this action to the industrial tribunal to see whether this lock-out by management is proper and legal.

"We don't [have much] hope the government will refer this case for adjudication."

Adversity?s worst nightmare: Warner native overcomes her way to London Paralympics

? She?s carried an unfair load of adversity.

That?s my words or your words, not hers.

Look close at the life Cassie Mitchell leads, and it?s just not a fair fight on behalf of adversity itself. The Warner native body-slams it, doing so without the use of her legs and limited use of her arms.

Her spirit alone, her zest to conquer, blows adversity off its feet, and shames it for even thinking it belongs in her neighborhood of life.

She?s kept it from getting in the way of her dream, which she?ll realize late this month when the London 2012 Paralympics follows the Olympic counterpart, Aug. 29-Sept. 9.

Now living in Atlanta, she lives a far different life than the one she saw for herself as a Warner High School senior in 1999. She was part of the Lady Eagles? state championship that year. She was set on running track at William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo., where she would also be a pre-med major.

She was also an outstanding barrel racer among other rodeo activities, having won four world championship event titles and two all-around titles. She could have easily done that or pursued gymnastics, something she began doing at the age of 2 and eventually becoming part of an elite team competing statewide.

Life was full of options.

Then came that summer morning, just weeks after her high school graduation.

?My legs wouldn?t move,? she said.

Nor would they again.

?Dumbfounded?

The sudden strike came from a condition known as Neuromyelitis Optica or Devic?s Disease, an auto-immune, inflammatory disease of the central nervous system in which there are episodes of inflammation and damage to the myelin (fatty, protective covering of nerves) that almost exclusively affect the optic (eye) nerves and spinal cord.

Her parents, Randy and Clara Mitchell, were stunned when she called them into her bedroom.

?She had just gotten her immunizations current for college and I remember the night before she told my husband and I she was feeling like she was coming down with the flu,? Clara said. ?She took some Tylenol and went to bed.

?That next morning I was like dumbfounded, then scared. It was so out of the blue and still, it took us about a year to get a complete diagnosis.?

She?d had symptoms as early as 12 with an onset of double vision. The actual diagnosis came when the paralysis moved from her legs into her trunk and lower back.

After a year or so, she began college at Oklahoma State, Cassie took up wheelchair basketball, and almost from the start, excelled at it, becoming an All-American. The Wentz Research Scholar and USA Today Academic All-American graduated with a degree in chemical engineering, then went on to Georgia Tech where she began work on her Ph.D. in biomedical engineering.

It was there that she made the U.S. women?s team in 2006, putting her on course for an Olympics goal in 2008.

The disease struck again, impairing her wrists, hands and triceps muscles.

?I couldn?t open or close my fingers,? she said.

Adversity, striking another blow, had made her quadriplegic.

She still had her studies and a research career in front of her. Shortly thereafter, Robert Lee, a professor at Georgia Tech who was her mentor on her graduate thesis had an off-the-cuff conversation with her about things outside the classroom.

The discussion, she said, turned into what she ultimately wanted from her life.

?The obvious was my work,? she remembers thinking.

But typical of a research professor, he was digging further.

?I?m talking about your dreams,? he recalled himself saying in a phone interview this past week.? ?She?d played some quad rugby and I made some comment that she was really good at it and ought to pursue it more.?

She?d played for a Shepherd Spinal Cord Injury and Rehabilitation Hospital team from 2006-11, helping them to the national championships four years in a row, placing third in 2011.

?She had one of these ?yeah, well, I?ve been down that road before and it didn?t turn out.?? Lee said. ?I finally got it out of her that when this condition struck her, she came up with a dream to make it to the Olympics. I think what I did at that point was kind of give her a kick in the butt, you know, noting that not everyone has a life dream and those that do need to figure out a way to make it happen.?

Cassie agreed it was a pep talk she needed.

?At that point I didn?t see rugby being realistic but there were some individual sports, but I?d have to train on my own,? Cassie said. ?I remember him saying ?we?ll let?s pick one, you?re here working on your postdoctoral and as long as you?re here, I?ll do what I can to help you make it happen.?

?I was a little hesitant, but I was hearing this little voice, ?don?t be afraid, I am with you.? Although my faith?s always been important to me, at the time I wasn?t? thinking of that being a scripture but it was.?

Isaiah 41:10: ?So do not? fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.? (NIV)

Translated for Cassie?s sake: Adversity, I?m about to mount a rally.

Within six weeks she was competing in cycling. She obtained a special glove she used to grip her cranks. She wears a patch, usually concealed by sunglasses, over one eye to offset the double vision.

?I didn?t have a bike so I borrowed one which didn?t fit or function for a female quadriplegic and we had to make adaptations,? she said.

Within a year, she was in Denmark where she won two world championships in the fall of 2011.? For some reasons she still finds hard to explain, those marks didn?t meet the criteria to qualify for the ParaPan American Games or offer her an automatic qualification spot in London.

That?s when the thought of wheelchair track came to her.

?I went online to look at the track qualifications for USA track and field, I had to compete in one International Paralympic? Committee approved meet in 2011 (in addition to meeting the Paralympic time standards in 2012),? she said.

There was one in Chula Vista, Calif.

?I borrowed a track chair that was three inches too big, cashed in all my frequent flyer miles and went there,? she said.

Undaunted

?

She won the 100, 200 and 400 meter races and set an American record for her classification in? the 400. Now, she thought, perhaps she could not only get an Olympic birth in one sport, but two.

In June, a week before the U.S. track trials, she went to the cycling trials in Augusta, Ga., and lowered her world record by seven percent and got her fifth national championship. Again, on discretionary criteria, she was short.

?I?m like, ?what more can I do?? It was a very emotional low to not hear my name called for the cycling team,? she said. ?I had to remind myself, in five days I?m still competing for a berth in track and field, and qualifications in track are by time. I know what I?ve done and I know I?m capable.?

In Indianapolis, she qualified for the Paralympics in the 100 meters and 200 meters with personal best times, and she additionally qualified for the discus ? becoming the only USA athlete who will compete in both track and field events in London.

Yes, this from the girl who had lost the ability to grip.

?It?s definitely not a conventional frisbee-like throw,? she said. ?It?s more like a pendulum move off to my side. I?ll take some swings to get my shoulder in motion and it?s like a little bit like tossing a bowling ball as I come across my chest.?

Her typical toss goes 13 meters. Her every move impresses her parents and those who have watched her since childhood.

?You think parents should be the ones teaching their kids but she?s the one that?s taught us so much,? Clara said. ?It?s surreal knowing she?s going to London. I?ve gotten so emotional calling everyone about it. Are we making the trip? If it takes a loan, or whatever, absolutely.?

Dotty Faith has known Cassie from her days attending York Street Christian Church.

?Hers is a story that if I heard it from someone else, I?d think they were lying,? Faith said. ?But I?ve seen it for myself. I?ve seen her live it and it?s a marvelous story.?

One wonders what she could inspire in her 20 undergraduate students at Georgia Tech. A cure for cancer? A cure for what ails her?

?I?m not one to say if someone comes in with a cold and doesn?t feel like they?re up to their work, that hey, look at what I?ve overcome, too bad for you, get over it,? she said. ?That?s not really what matters. That?s little stuff.

?If I encourage them in anything it?s to go for what you want to accomplish. I think everyone has natural God-given abilities, an inner drive if you will, that?s a blessing from God. Everyone has it in some form. You just have to apply it.?

Obama Wants $1 Billion For "Master Teachers Corps"

Please. As a conservative, methinks you're talking out your ass. We have no problem with public school teachers. What we have a problem with is unions that continue to protect teachers that are poor performers or don't adapt to new teaching techniques, which is exactly the reason why we're in the sad state we are, these days. The point is that as teachers reach tenure, some, not all, can become complacent, and just use their job for a paycheck, while others go out of their way to create interesting, stimulating lesson plans. Who gets rewarded more? In most cases, the complacent one, as they've achieved tenure, they get greater raises and it's nigh on impossible to fire them.

^^^ This. I'm also a conservative (though I will most likely be voting for Obama), and indeed the problem is not public school teachers, but how many unions (not all, but many) protect under-performing teachers. There are vested interests to keep the status-quo.

However, the other side of the coin to be fair is that many in the current conservative echelons attack the teaching profession, think privatization and education budget cutting (think Gov. Rick Scott) is the solution of everything, and worse, they pander to creationists (which is one of the reasons I will not be voting GOP in these coming elections.)

There is a lot to blame on both sides of the political fence. The important thing is to move past the blaming game, pick and plan and work from there.

As a direct reply to the AC, whenever someone says "conservatives X" or "liberals X", it is almost certain that one can ignore his/her words without significant loss of information. Generalizations are the bread and butter of the feeble minded fodder for the identity politics cannons.

As a realist, I think this program is a step in the right direction, incentivizing good, young teachers to excel and actually TEACH their students, rather than just read out of a book. ON the other hand, nothing the federal government ever does ONLY costs a billion dollars.

I agree. I think there will be significant problems, and unfortunately the current GOP leadership that panders to the far right will cry havock just because the plan was proposed by dark-skinned-socialist-with-muslim-sounding-name-who-of-course-is-a-manchurian-candidates-for-the-chinese-and-satan. There will also be elements in teacher unions

No plan is ever perfect, which is why there should always be opposition, negotiation, compromise and reconciliation. But one cannot wait forever for the perfect plan. We pick one and we move from there. We fix, keep or drop pieces accordingly.

However imperfect this might be, and regardless of the problems that will occur (and they will), at least in spirit, this is a move in the right direction.

Sony glasses give subtitles to those who need them

23 hrs.

If you're deaf, hard of hearing, or perhaps don't speak English very well, getting to see the latest movies can be a hassle. Few showings have subtitles, and or maybe the theater doesn't even have a close-captioned copy. Sony has created a pair of cinema glasses that are transparent except for where a tiny projector shines subtitles visible only to the wearer.

They're called Entertainment Access Glasses; you can read the brochure here (PDF).?The tiny readout can be customized for size, perceived distance, and language ? so now anyone can go see any showing of any movie, regardless of whether their hearing is intact or whether they can speak the language in the film.

The glasses are available now, but not to the general public; because they need to be updated with information like the latest blockbusters' subtitles, and would need to hook into the theater's synchronizing system, they have to be kept by the theater itself.

Unfortunately, they're only compatible with a certain type of Sony projector at the moment, so they might be a bit hard to find for a while. Apparently Regal Cinemas has been upgrading and a few of its theaters have these already, so if there's one in your neighborhood, it could be worth a call.
